Last night our boat, the Conscience, was attacked off Malta in International waters. The Turkish delegation and the crew were already on board, and the rest of us, who were scheduled to board on the 29th but were delayed by bureaucratic measures, were waiting to board. The elimination of National Endowment for the Humanities funding on April 2 will result in Wisconsin Humanities closing its doors very soon. The end of NEH funding to Wisconsin Humanities and other state humanities councils will harm communities in every state, in every Congressional district, and contribute to the erasure of our shared humanity and hopes for democracy. Cuts to Public Libraries and Schools The Baraboo Acts Coalition works closely with staff at the Carnegie-Schadde Memorial Public Library and the School District of Baraboo for many of their events and activities. Recent executive orders and proposed cuts threaten vital federal funding and programs that support Wisconsin’s public schools and libraries. These resources support students with disabilities, economically disadvantaged students and families, youth mental health programs, English language learners, smaller class sizes, and help fund important initiatives like access to school meals, career and technical education, academic opportunities, and more. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction has interactive maps showing how devastating these cuts would be to Wisconsin, Sauk County, and Baraboo. Gracie Waukechon/Meyawaew is a student at the College of the Menominee Nation and activist from Bonduel Wisconsin. A campaign has been launched to try to overturn Wisconsin's unconstitutional law limiting your right to engage in Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) in support of Palestinian rights Since 2018, Wisconsin has been one of 38 states with an “anti-boycott law” influenced by special interest groups supporting a foreign government. Act 248 requires that in order to secure a state contract of $100,000 or more, applicants must pledge not to boycott Israel (and only Israel). The law also prohibits all levels of government from dog catcher on up from engaging in any type of BDS -- again, only against Israel. On Wednesday, April 23, members and supporters of the Wisconsin Right to Boycott Campaign will meet at the State Capitol to lobby our representatives to support new legislation to restore our right to boycott. There will be a group briefing at 9 am, followed by prearranged meetings with representatives through 2-3 pm. The day will close with a rally to protect our voices, our democracy, and our country. RESTORE DRIVER'S LICENSES FOR ALL More than 65,000 workers in our state are immigrants without documentation. State law prohibits them from driving legally. ACCEPT THE FEDERAL FUNDING FOR BADGERCARE EXPANSION Wisconsin is one of only 10 states which has failed to expand its state Medicaid program, denying affordable health care to roughly 90,000 Wisconsinites. FUND WISCONSIN EDUCATION The Legislature has been short changing our public schools for years. We need a budget that increases per-pupil spending to make up for years of inflation and, especially, that reimburses school districts fairly for the cost of special education. On April 10, we will be asking everyone to discuss these issues with their elected officials. He’s the executive Director of a Menominee Indian community organization called Menikahnaehkem. He's also a Community organizer, activist, author, amateur archaeologist and lecturer. Anahkwet has organized a lot of events that have uplifted the human condition and demonstrated how enriching the Menominee culture is. He's lectured at universities on the connection Menominee Indians have to the Menominee River. He's also written articles for Environmental Health News and others. When Anahkwet isn't working you'll find him enjoying time with his partner and their children. Anahkwet is an advocate for indigenous people everywhere.   Erika Bach, WNPJ Board Secretary.  Erika joined the WNPJ board in 2020, in the midst of the global uprising and calls for an end to state sanctioned violence. She is compelled to action in collaboration with people who support the need for justice in the interconnected criminal legal carceral systems and our educational, environmental and economic infrastructures. Erika strives to build community in solidarity with lifelong learners and facilitators of social, racial and disability justice, accessible community well-being, human rights advocacy and peace education.   Mary Kay Baum - a lifetime of advocacy. After some years as a Catholic nun, Mary Kay went on to the UW Madison for a degree in Hebrew studies. She advocated against the Vietnam War. And as a Junior in college, she ran for and was elected the downtown district of the Dane County Board. Social justice work that drove her to go to UW Law School and served terms on the Madison Metro School Board. Her first job out of law school was Corrections Legal Services.  Mary Kay volunteered to help the National Lawyer Association monitor safety of the Menominee Warrior Society who took over the Alexian Brother Novitiate on January 1st, 1975. 10 trips to war torn El Salvador around 1986-90 showed her the rebuilding and re-loss of democracy - relevant to today. She later became an ordained Lutheran minister. Mary Kay next realized that nature and rural life provided antidotes for her health. She discovered the Pine Relict State Natural Area and added it to her list of passions. The Wisconsin DNR named Mary Kay the state Volunteer of the Year in 2019.  She remains active as a Board member of WNPJ, a strong advocate of the environment as well as Native rights and prison reform   Rob Danielson  lives in La Farge, Wisconsin. He is Secretary of S.O.U.L. of Wisconsin (Save Our Unique Lands) assigned with its mission to, "to promote efficient and responsible management of electrical power for the public good, while protecting the natural, social and economic environments and citizens of Wisconsin.” S.O.U.L. is a member of WNPJ   Paul DeMain,  also known by his Ojibwe name Skabewis is a citizen of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin and of Ojibwe descent currently residing on the Lac Courte Oreilles Ojibwe reservation. The retired editor of News From Indian Country for 33 years, DeMain has been involved in environmental and treaty related issues most of his life. DeMain currently assists the Chequamegon Bay area organization Communities United by Water and sits on the Board of Directors for Superior Biodiversity, a proponent of public land stewardship.    Dena Eakles, WNPJ Board member Dena is a writer, farmer, and activist who loves life. He sees things at a systems level, plays well with others, and is eager to share what he has learned and keep learning.After graduating from North Crawford High School, he went on to Eckerd College in Florida where he graduated with a degree in Communications, minoring in International Studies and Global Affairs, and Spanish, He has a second life in Oaxaca, Mexico, rounding out his education. He is dedicated to helping folks protect the values and rights of our communities and ecosystems. He hopes to inspire a deeper sense of our collective responsibility to protect these rights. Forest keeps busy on a wide range of projects involving grassroots networking and cross-organizational coordination, research and education, public speaking and community organizing, and more. He is inspired by the massive outpourings of community support CSP has been able to prompt over the years, the data our citizen scientists have generated, the 15 independent organizations catalyzed, and the enduring relationships that have built our grassroots networks on a host of issues. Forest can be found planting, harvesting, cooking and eating food, playing with livestock, cutting firewood, or paddling on the water, the backwaters of the Lower Wisconsin River or the Pacific Ocean.   Anita Johnson  is the Outreach and Education Manager for Souls To The Polls MKE, She also spearheaded election protection and the election administration program at Citizen Action. Previously, she worked for VoteRiders as Wisconsin ID State Coalition Coordinator, People For American Way as Wisconsin Election Protection State Coordinator, recruiting and training volunteers to work the polls on election day as well as educating the public about voter rights. Anita has served on the Wisconsin Election Administration Council for the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board, the state agency that manages elections. She also worked for many years for AFSCME District Council 48 and is a member of The Coalition of Black Trade Unionist CBTU. Anita has served  on the boards of the Labor Historical Society and the Wisconsin State Retirees, BLOC, Citizen Action of Wisconsin and the African American Round Table . She has received a number of awards, she is very proud to be a recipient of the Robert H. Friebert Social Justice Award, she recently received the Black Excellence Award.   Having attended Milwaukee Area Technical College, Anita is also a graduate of Future Milwaukee, Center For Progressive Leadership and the Midwest Academy Organizing program, as well as a graduate of Milwaukee Business Training Institute.   John Peck, WNPJ Board member John grows vegetables and flowers with his partner on a 20 acre farm near Brooklyn, WI, he taught Economics part-time at Madison College, and is also the executive director of Family Farm Defenders, a national grassroots organization with a mission of promoting food sovereignty, agroecology, and socioeconomic justice.  John is also a longtime volunteer of other WNPJ member groups, such as the Madison Infoshop and WI Books to Prisoners.   Britnie Remer  is based in Wausau and is 350 Wisconsin's Fossil Fuel Resistance Organizer. The main focus of her work is organizing to shut down Line 5, but also includes utility and energy justice aspects, and fighting methane gas expansion for a fossil-free future. Her passion for, and dedication to, movement work comes from her experience with the Poor People’s Campaign, where she has been organizing for several years. Britnie has particular interest in the effects of the climate crisis and fossil fuel industry on poor and low-income individuals and communities. As the scene of important encounters with God at the origin of their religions, Jews, Christians, and Muslims all claim a special relationship with the land of Canaan/Palestine. This raises a theological question: "To whom does this land belong?”. This question has become an important dimension of the political debate about Israel’s treatment of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank. Based on their understanding of certain texts from Jewish scriptures, some biblical scholars claim that God gave this land to the Jews, and they have the right to remove all non-Jewish inhabitants. Many others interpret these texts differently and reject that claim. In this Bible Study, Dr. Olson examines and evaluates this interpretation with reference to the debate between Palestinian theologian Mitri Raheb and Old Testament scholar Walter Brueggeman. This study will also examine biblical texts that appear to encourage work for a peaceful or multi-state solution for this conflicted land and suffering land and people. Following the presentation, participants will be able to engage in conversation with Dr. Olson and one another about the use of these biblical texts to support political violence in the Middle East struggle and how other texts might be used to support peace-making going forward. We'll be trying to find the right adjectives to describe the Trump administration’s dizzying, maddening, disheartening, dispiriting new policies toward the UN and U.S. foreign assistance. Here are instances and changes: withdrawal from the World Health Organization, withdrawal from the Human Rights Council, withdrawal from the Paris Climate agreement and the accompanying climate development fund, stopping funds for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), freezing all foreign assistance for a 90 day period to vet whether funding for assistance is consistent with an America First goal. So far, the USAID agency which has annually provided $40 billion in aid annually will be shuttered. The UN operated International Organization of Migration and The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee agency are experiencing huge cuts in U.S. contributions. UNICEF and the World Food Program will be experiencing significant cuts in U.S. funding. UN agency are being asked to complete a questionnaire to determine whether their purposes align with America First and reinforce U.S. sovereignty and whether their mission does not include references to climate change or DEI related activities. We’re so excited to share that on Friday, February 28, an administrative law judge issued an order to extend the stay on construction for the Line 5 reroute in northern Wisconsin! The stay is in response to the lawsuit filed by Midwest Environmental Advocates on behalf of 350 Wisconsin, League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, and Sierra Club in December 2024, which challenged the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) decision to issue regulatory approval for Enbridge’s controversial 41-mile reroute of the Line 5 oil pipeline around the Bad River Band’s reservation. What does this mean in everyday language? It means that construction on the reroute cannot proceed until our court case is resolved. In these times of uncertainty and rising oligarchic authoritarian rule, it is essential that we: Find ourselves and each other, Unite for the protection of each other, our planet, and our democracy, And, get organized and maximize our people power to transform our world. The March to Election Day Tour can help us to do all three. At each tour stop we’ll listen and learn; share plans and ideas; show up for each other, take turns, and explore the possibilities of United Action. At most of the tour stops, we will hold 2 distinct events (thereby increasing the potential for participation by a wide variety of groups). Both will be “nonpartisan” and issue-oriented. One of these two events will focus on the April 1st WI Supreme Court Race . It will stress its importance that this race holds for human rights, our environment, our democracy, and all aspects of our lives in Wisconsin. These events will also celebrate and spotlight the work of the local groups who are working to turn out the vote on or before April 1st. We will also give Supreme Court candidates opportunities to share their views and values at these events by answering the questions of the people. Groups that are working on these or other justice issues are invited to fully co-host and lead these events. All justice partners are free to table, present, and share their work, literature, etc… at these events. The other of these two distinct events will be an “All People’s Forum” where groups and individuals can share information as well as action plans and ideas related to any of the critical issues of our time. Here are just some of the issues that may be addressed at any of these events: Ending U.S. support for genocide and crimes against humanity. Learning how we can better keep each other safe (especially our immigrant, BIPOC, Muslim, and transgender neighbors.) Helping Indigenous water protectors Stop Line 5! Demanding universal health care that includes legal and safe abortion care. Educating and activating voters to realize the extreme importance of the April 1st Wisconsin Supreme Court race. Closing at least one Wisconsin Prison this year. Getting people connected and helping to organize a united movement for peace, justice, sustainability and democracy. Groups that are participating in either of these events will be free to present, table, share liturature, and have a part in creating the event(s). Both of these distinct types of tour stop events will provide communities around Wisconsin with opportunities to find each other and ways to work together for our collective safety and liberation.
