During this time, we’ve learned more than a few things about deportations and protecting our communities. Deportation defense has been a critical way of fighting back and learning how to slow the deportation machine down. It also is a very clear and direct way to be in solidarity with immigrant communities. That’s why we’re hosting the Deportation Defense Series: Skill Up + Crew Up, a 3-part virtual series on deportation defense on December 10th, 13th, and 16th. Register here. Rights of Nature is a global movement that explores the concept that natural ecosystems, species, and elements, such as rivers, forests, and mountains, have inherent rights to exist, thrive, and evolve. This idea challenges traditional legal systems that treat nature as property to be exploited, advocating instead for laws that recognize nature’s intrinsic value. Our speaker, Anahkwet (Guy Reiter), will cover key principles, such as the right of nature to be protected from harm, the right of ecosystems to regenerate, and the right of communities to defend nature from environmental degradation. He will also present case studies of the successful integration of Rights of Nature into legal frameworks, such as in Ecuador and New Zealand, and will examine the growing movement to enshrine these rights in national, state, tribal, and international law. Anahkwet (Guy Reiter) is a traditional Menominee who resides on the Menominee Reservation. He’s the Executive Director of a Menominee Indian community organization called Menikahnaehkem. He is also a community organizer, activist, author, amateur archaeologist, and lecturer. Anahkwet has organized a lot of events that have uplifted the human condition and demonstrated how enriching the Menominee culture is. He has lectured at universities on the connection Menominee Indians have to the Menominee River. He has also written articles for Environmental Health News and other publications. When Anahkwet isn’t working, you’ll find him enjoying time with his partner and their children. The pain and trauma they are enduring is unimaginable, and it will leave scars that last a lifetime. Now is the time for action—and it starts with all of us. In less than three weeks, the new legislative session will begin. Demand that our legislators prioritize gun violence prevention. Wisconsin’s politicians must pass evidence-based laws that we know save lives. We cannot let them off the hook. Signing this petition today, though, is just a start. We must maintain the urgency we feel at this moment. That’s why we need you to commit to taking every action we send your way in the coming months. Consistent, collective action from across Wisconsin is what will secure this change. This historic legislation has been protecting lesbian, gay and bisexual Wisconsinites from discrimination at their workplace, in housing, and in public accommodations for forty years. Our state law currently does not provide protections against discrimination based on gender identity or expression. At Fair Wisconsin we believe that it is equally important these protections be extended to protect all people based on their gender identity and expression as well. State of Wisconsin employees and contractors are protected from discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity and expression by Governor Evers  Executive Order #1 . Currently the cities of Appleton, Cudahy, De Pere, Green Bay, Janesville, La Crosse, Madison, Milwaukee, Oshkosh (partial protections), Sun Prairie, Racine, and Verona provide these protections at the local level, with comprehensive gender-inclusive housing, employment and public accommodations protections against discrimination. In addition, Dane County and Milwaukee County have fair housing protections and personnel policies that prohibit LGBTQ+ discrimination and in 2023 passed trans sanctuary resolutions. We continue to work to advance local nondiscrimination ordinances, statewide and in targeted communities as a way to increase protections while also educating the public about this issue and to underscore the need for comprehensive state and federal laws. Water Protector Organizing Meeting - Ashland Tuesday, December 17th @ 6:00-8:00 pm Vaughn Library - 502 Main Street West, Ashland In the Chequamegon Bay area, the Bad River Band has directed Enbridge to shut down and remove Line 5 from the Bad River Watershed. Instead of respecting the Band’s sovereignty to culture, Enbridge has initiated the permitting process to construct a new section of pipeline around the Reservation, putting an even greater portion of the watershed at risk for an oil spill. While thousands of people have spoken up in opposition to this project, the Wisconsin DNR just approved the permits for the project, one of the final pieces needed by Enbridge to proceed. As such, now is the time to organize together to stop this project and protect Lake Superior! Water is Life! Dwayne was experiencing homelessness, he died of sepsis, a blood infection that could have been treated with a simple antibiotic prescription. Dwayne’s death helped bring the community together to create this annual event. We thank First Congregational UCC , First United Methodist Church, Lakeview Lutheran Church, Congregation Shaarei Shamayim, Unity of Madison, MOSES and the Osterhaus Family for their continued collaboration. In both Lebanon and Gaza, the use of white phosphorus, the inordinate amount of asbestos-poisoned rubble produced in the destruction of the built environment, the movement of animals because of different patterns of human inhabitation will all have long-term effects on the inhabitability of the land, affecting all the region, including Israel. Yet, Palestinians and Lebanese have insisted to continue to find ways to inhabit the ruins produced, to grow food, and tend to all of those living. This panel will examine these environmental tactics of war and their long-term effects, along with ground-up tactics of survival and sumud, for it is the latter that holds the key to rebuilding and cultivating futures on the day after. Throughout the series, participants will learn how to craft stories focused on the theme of WELLNESS. Without our immediate, collective action, this legislation could pass and have far-reaching effects for organizations like WISDOM, Gamaliel, its affiliates, and partner organizations and result in the loss of their not-for-profit status simply by exercising their rights to free speech. According to supporters of H.R. 9495, this piece of legislation is simply meant to focus on nonprofits that support terrorist activities and was birthed in response to the conflicts on college campuses over the war in Gaza; however, a growing number of organizations, including civil rights, religious, reproductive health, immigrant rights, human rights, racial justice, LGBTQIA+, environmental, and educational organizations, describe this bill as legislation that would grant the executive branch broad and easily abused powers to swiftly revoke the tax-exempt status of a nonprofit by asserting that it is a “terrorist supporting organization.” Per the legislation, the Treasury Department could make the designation without any real due process and without having to produce evidence justifying the decision. In a Trump administration, support for a Gaza ceasefire could be enough grounds.The bad news is that the bill still passed and now goes to the Senate. Contact Mary Kay Baum marykbaum@gmail.com Update on Line 5 from 350 Wisconsin On November 14, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) granted Canadian oil giant Enbridge Energy permits for its controversial plan to construct a new segment of its Line 5 oil pipeline in northern Wisconsin. The 70-year-old pipeline currently cuts across the heart of the Bad River Reservation, where it has been trespassing on Tribal land for more than a decade. In 2019, the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa filed a lawsuit in federal court to force its removal. Rather than shut down the aging pipeline, Enbridge applied for permits to build a new 40-mile section of pipeline around the perimeter of the Reservation that would allow its continued operation within the Bad River watershed. Midwest Environmental Advocates is currently providing legal representation to several organizations working to stop new construction on Line 5: League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, 350 Wisconsin and Sierra Club – Wisconsin Chapter. Some of our WNPJ members may still have these Immigrant Welcome yard signs we were selling back in 2008. If you do, send us a photo of the sign in your yard – and we’ll post it on our WNPJ Facebook page! Stand up for immigrant rights. These signs featured handwritten messages of "welcome" in six languages by people from many of Wisconsin’s immigrant communities. The two-sided yard sign featured "welcome" in Spanish and Hmong, and we had single-sided window signs featured in either Spanish or Hmong.

“Mobilize: Creating a Collective Shift from Militarism to a Culture of Peace and Environmental Justice” Members and allies joined WNPJ for our 33rd Fall Assembly on Saturday, October 19, 2024, as we explored the interconnectedness between militarism and the environment and our collective and conscious transition towards a culture of peace. WNPJ began over 30 years ago to confront the voices of war. The Peacemaker of the Year award is given to those who have contributed to the well-being of our community and humanity at large. *** SPEAKERS Videos below. Alan Chavoya is Outreach Chair of the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression. He speaks on bringing awareness to and ending militarism on our campuses and in our communities. Dr. Samer Alatout , recipient of the WNPJ 2024 Peacemaker of the Year Award, is a Professor in the Dept. of Community and Environmental Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This award is given in recognition of Dr. Alatout's consistent urging to collectively build a culture of global and environmental justice.
