- JustDane Bakery Seeking Supporters and Backpacks!
WNPJ is a proud supporter of member group JustDane. For over fifteen years, JustDane has led with compassionate and life changing initiatives. From their website: “Life’s circumstance or missteps can lead to incarceration or other life challenges that can be difficult to overcome. It’s better for everyone in our community when we can ensure a person has the chance to put the pieces of their lives back together; creating a community where everyone has an opportunity to succeed.” Their initiative, JustBakery, offers students the opportunity to learn new skills in the culinary arts and upon completion, gain automatic acceptance into the Madison College Culinary Program. The next class begins May 1 and they are requesting backpacks for the incoming students. Let’s help get them all they need! Here is a link to a great backpack. For more information: info@justdane.org

- In the NEWS - LaCrosse Tribune Letter to the Editor from Al Gedicks
Al Gedicks: Smaller nuclear reactors will increase waste (April 7, 2023) (Al Gedicks is the contact for the WNPJ member group: www.wrpc.net www.facebook.com/WisconsinResourcesProtectionCouncil/) Dairyland Power Cooperative has an agreement with NuScale to consider the construction of small modular reactors ("Weighing nuclear options, March 27, La Crosse Tribune). Brent Ridge lists the smaller size as an advantage of these reactors. However, a May 2022 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences has reached the opposite conclusion. Energy in a nuclear reactor is produced when a neutron splits a uranium atom in the reactor core, generating additional neutrons that go on to split other uranium atoms, creating a chain reaction. But some neutrons escape from the core — a problem called neutron leakage — and strike surrounding materials, such as steel and concrete. These materials then become radioactive when "activated" by neutrons from the core. Because of their smaller size, small modular reactors will experience more neutron leakage than conventional reactors. The study found that the small reactors will generate at least nine times more neutron-activated steel than conventional power plants. These radioactive materials have to be carefully managed prior to disposal. Far from being cheaper and producing fewer radioactive byproducts than conventional large-scale reactors, small modular reactors will produce more radioactive waste that will add to the costs of managing nuclear wastes. - Building Unity is seeking partners....for the upcoming WI Campaign for Love, Unity, and Equity
Dear Partner in Justice, Building Unity is seeking partners to endorse both our next action (4/20 Legalize Cannabis Press Conference), but also the whole series of actions, events, holidays, and solidarity opportunities that we believe will help us to build momentum towards a stronger united movement that will make life a bit more manageable for all of us. Please, read on. Imagine how much easier our work would be if we, as a united movement, made sure that all of our messages, purposes, callings, actions and visions for a more peaceful, just, and ecologically sane world were equally worked into a unified plan. What if instead of all doing our own things, we came together and created a plan that included all of us?! What if we took turns, showed up for each other, and together filled the halls of power with our own people? Building Unity and partners like you are launching the Campaign for Love, Unity, and Equity(a placeholder name that can be changed at any time) and we know that we can’t do this without you. A first draft of a timeline of movement momentum building can be viewed here: https://tinyurl.com/CLUETimeline. We hope that you will help us make sure that your group’s upcoming priorities are part of this shared evolving timeline. Please help us to build momentum through this spring and into the summer by sharing this frequently updated flier wherever you go. Please take this Doodle Poll to help us pick the best date for an early July Statewide All People’s Justice Summit where we will build a united statewide plan that will center the voices of these traditionally marginalized constituencies: BIPOC LGBTQIA+ Immigrants and Refugees People with disabilities People with criminal records Workers Women Peace, Justice, Democracy, and Environmental Activists And, give us to work together and build statewide, efficient and powerful unity. Together we will forge a plan that will lead to a major shift in Wisconsin’s political climate. As efficiently and quickly as possible, we, the people must make sure that the halls of power are filled with real compassionate humans - people who understand the essential need for comprehensive justice and a dramatic shift away from politics driven by big money, military domination, and fear. As a human family we must put our faith in a politics driven by our Commitment to Love, Unity, and Equity. It is time for all of us to get a CLUE - together People, Peace, and Planet over Profit! Please call me if you’d like to speak at our press conference this Thursday (4/20 at noon.) Lastly, and again, please let us promote your great work and add it to our momentum building flier. Timothy Cordon 608-630-3633 www.BuildingUnityWisconsin.org www.facebook.com/buildingunitywi What might be possible if our state's greatest grassroots leaders for peace, justice, sustainability, and/or democracy came together and committed themselves to creating a united plan - a plan for a dramatic shift - "a great turning" towards a peaceful, compassionate, and livable world. What if we, the people of Wisconsin drafted them to do this? Perhaps other states and nations would follow suit. It is time for humanity to get a CLUE.* Time is running out and we are the ones that we have been waiting for. * Learn more about the Campaign for Love, Unity, and Equity. - Coming together for peace has never been easy.
The founding of WNPJ was based on a coalition of people uniting for a single goal: to end the Gulf War. Wars continue, the excuses for war continue and we have not found the secret ingredient to ending war, if there is one. But peace-minded people must try. In hopes of finding common ground you are welcome to a zoom call hosted by Peace Action WI and Milwaukee End the Wars Coalition and co-sponsored by WNPJ, Veterans for Peace #25 Madison, Echo Valley Hope, Interfaith Peace Working Group, Building Unity, and others. Participate in a discussion with speakers on differing viewpoints as we seek common ground. Please register and share: · Peace talks now · Mutual ceasefire · No U.S. actions to escalate or prolong the war Saturday, Apr 15, 3:00 – 4:30 pm https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYuduCqrjMvHNLW1WQx_Fz1LqNKvNfgF5Oc Questions? - UKRAINE Peace? Invitation to a WI Organizing Zoom!
We invite you to a statewide zoom meeting for WI peace people on Sat., April 15, 3 pm - 4:30 pm.Please register in advance for this meeting at: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYuduCqrjMvHNLW1WQx_Fz1LqNKvNfgF5Oc . We hope participants will come away with ideas they can use for local action. Please share this with your friends. The zoom meeting will deal with framing the issue and feature folks who can describe lobbying Congress, organizing public events such as stands for peace, petitioning, and more. It will include an expert on the Ukraine war, former CIA officer turned political activist Ray McGovern, for an update on the current situation and peace negotiations, answers to detail questions, and suggestions for how to talk to Congress about sending weapons. Other viewpoints are welcome. Our place in the peace movement is that we want the U.S. government to change policy to promote peace talks now and mutual ceasefire, and to take no actions to escalate or prolong the war. This project, "Uniting Wisconsin to end the War in Ukraine" is sponsored by the Milwaukee End the Wars Coalition and Peace Action-WI, and co-sponsored by the WI Network for Peace and Justice, Building Unity WI, the Interfaith Peace Working Group, Echo Valley Hope, and Veterans for Peace, Madison, WI Clarence Kailin Chapter 25. Thanks for assistance from the Fellowship of Reconciliation. Several WI peace leaders will be on the zoom to help with strategy and action planning. These include Jim Carpenter of the Milwaukee End the Wars Coalition, Pam Richard from Peace Action WI, Mary Kay Baum from the WI Network for Peace and Justice, Steve Watrous and Martha Collins from the United Nations Association-Milwaukee chapter*, John Peck from Family Farm Defenders*, Tim Cordon from Building Unity, Art Heitzer from the WI Coalition to Normalize Relations with Cuba*, Brad Geyer from Madison Vets for Peace, Dena Eakles from Echo Valley Hope, and from the Interfaith Peace Working Group: Rev. Dr. Jerry Folk, Jane Kavaloski, and Fred Trost. We are seeking people to describe what peace tactic worked for them. The need: the war in Ukraine grinds on with death and destruction, plus danger of nuclear escalation, while our peace movement is divided and unable to pressure Congress and Pres. Biden to do more serious negotiating and to avoid escalating the war. To make our contribution to peace, WI activists need to find some unity and then organize more work on public opinion, the media, etc., and not just in Milwaukee and Madison. Organizers of this project also support: the continuation of humanitarian aid to victims of the war, U.S. acceptance of refugees, the brave individuals in Ukraine and Russia who use non-violent tactics to oppose this war, and funding for our domestic needs instead of war. To endorse or help with this effort, or ask questions, please contact Steve Watrous at wius.senateforum@gmail.com or 414-429-7567. [*Group names for identification purposes only.]

Senator Tammy Baldwin took swift action and contacted the State Department urging investigation and consequences to the settler who harmed Cassandra. We applaud her efforts, and with this sign on letter, we thank her and ask her to continue to seek justice. It is our hope that our united voices will demonstrate that eyes are on what is happening there and that we are weary of United States dollars being used in support of an apartheid system.
