You can be the change you wish to see: Of the people in Madison experiencing homelessness, 30% of them are children who keep growing. They are in need of the basics, like shoes, socks and underwear. Donate at one of the boxes as you enter First Unitarian Society or by shopping using the QR Codes here in the photo or the printed ones attached to the donation boxes. Reach Dane is so appreciative of your generous support. And the kids, you should see them smile with their new shoes. More information at First Unitarian Society of Madison
- Sign the WI PPC's Petition for expanded Medicaid
At the beginning of February, the Wisconsin Poor People's Campaign launched a petition to the state Joint Finance Committee demanding that they accept federal funds to expand Medicaid, fully fund access to healthcare to ensure that no person in Wisconsin is removed from Medicaid, and to recognize that healthcare is a human right. In that time, nearly one thousand people in 59 counties around the state have signed on. "Wisconsin should use every resource possible to help meet the needs of its low income citizens!" -Jane "The gap nationally and in Wisconsin between those who have and those who don't grows daily as does our unwillingness to face or think about or change our perspectives on poverty and provisions like healthcare. In the mean time, because it is a mean time, more and more folks fall into the chasm and the struggle grows deeper and filled with panic. What will we do as a community called to care for one another?" -Vicki "As a pastor in the ELCA, I believe all people are created in the image of God, that our lives hold dignity and worth, and that we all deserve access to the health care we need to be well and thrive. To turn away the funds that could help people receive health care is immoral. I ask the Wisconsin Joint Finance Committee: * Accept federal funds to expand Medicaid as 39 other states have already done. * Fully fund access to healthcare to ensure that no person in Wisconsin is removed from Medicaid. * Recognize that Healthcare is a Human Right and an integral part of the command to love our neighbors as ourselves." -Rachel "Healthcare is a human right. I, along with millions of our neighbors, will lose my insurance this April. It's not right. Do not roll back Medicaid coverage, it's saving lives!" -Danielle "We in Wisconsin are surrounded by states, all of which have expanded Medicaid with federal funds. It is time for Wisconsin to do the right thing for our citizens. There is no reason not do this. Let’s take care of our people now." -Dan If you have not done so already, please sign and share the petition by clicking here! Questions? Contact: Wisconsin Poor People's Campaign
- It's time for some important Action Alerts - ACT now!
If you are in Madison, please join Cassandra Dixon, April 23, from 2-4 pm, at the incredible Taza restaurant in Middleton, 1900 Cayuga St, on her return from several months in Palestine. “For my friends in the Madison area, I'd love to thank you in person with delicious Palestinian tea and snacks. One of the joys of visiting Palestine is the delicious food, and I would love the chance to give you a small taste!! I was able to bring back some beautiful new jewelry, hand embroidery and leather bags and wallets made and designed by my friend Laila at Women in Hebron Fair Trade Cooperative and we’ll have those, along with Palestinian olive oil & soap from Playgrounds for Palestine available for sale. Plus information on a Madison-Rafah Sister City fundraiser to help Masafer Yatta residents resist forced removal from their lands, and easy post cards and online links to contact congress. Please bring a friend!” Please click HERE to RSVP so that we will have enough food! Action Alert #1: Ask your representatives to take a stand on human rights in Palestine and US funding to Israel by signing this congressional letter to the Biden Administration. The sign-on window closes on Friday April 7th, so please don't delay! Rep. Jamaal Bowman and Senator Bernie Sanders have authored a congressional letter stating: At this inflection point, we ask your administration to undertake a shift in U.S. policy in recognition of the worsening violence, further annexation of land, and denial of Palestinian rights. Only by protecting democracy, human rights, and self-determination for all Palestinians and Israelis can we achieve a lasting peace. The letter asks the Biden administration to “ensure US taxpayer funds do not support projects in illegal settlements” and to “determine whether US-origin defense articles have been used in violation of existing US laws.” Also asking that the Arms Export Control Act and the Foreign Assistance Act, which says that US weapons can only be used for purposes of self-defense and cannot be used to commit human rights abuses, finally be applied to Israel. Israel is historically the largest recipient of US aid. You can use this link to send a message to your senator and representative. The letter has so far been signed by Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Summer Lee, Rashida Tlaib, Cori Bush, Ilhan Omar, Betty McCollum, André Carson, and Ayanna Pressley. Action Alert #2: Please use this link to ask WI Senator Tammy Baldwin to continue to press for a trial and legal consequences for the settler through the US State Department and the Israeli Police and Prosecution. (Click here for more information about the attack on Cassandra Dixon last month) · Thank them for their attention to the attack. · Ask that they continue to monitor the complaint in Israel and let the Israeli police know that we expect legal consequences for the settlers involved in the attack. · Request that the US Consulate visit Tuba in order to understand the threat of violence and human rights abuses caused by expansion of the illegal Israeli outpost of Havat Ma’on · Ask them to continue to request updates and a written report from the state dependent. · Express your appreciation for her attention to this matter, ask that she sign on to the Bowman Sanders letter, and add that you hope this will lead to greater attention by the Senator in the future to the reality of life on the ground under what is increasingly becoming an Apartheid regime that the US needs to start holding accountable. Contacts to the state department from other congressional representatives would also be very helpful, however with Tammy Baldwin you can mention that Cassandra Dixon is a constituent of hers. Here is a link to contact your senator and representative And Action Alert #3 - the WNPJ Sign on Letter..... There are moments in time when horrible acts of violence can be turned into nonviolent actions towards justice. This is such a moment. As WNPJ learned of the Israeli settler attack on our WNPJ member and friend, Cassandra Dixon, we were also made aware of the mistreatment of the Palestinians, mostly children, living in Masafer Yatta, the South Hebron Hills region of the occupied West Bank. Senator Tammy Baldwin took swift action and contacted the State Department urging investigation and consequences to the settler who harmed Cassandra. We applaud her efforts, and with this sign on letter, we thank her and ask her to continue to seek justice. It is our hope that our united voices will demonstrate that eyes are on what is happening there and that we are weary of United States dollars being used in support of an apartheid system. Please sign on to this letter to Senator Baldwin and urge your members and friends to do the same. We would like to send this to her by April 17th. Please make your best effort to reach as many people a possible. From the WNPJ Board - info@wnpj.org

- Action Alert: Ban Nuclear Weapons ~ Contact your Madison Alders ~ #BackFromTheBrink
Contact city alders and be sure they have all of the following information and links. Here's a sample letter - Dear Alder: We/I write to ask you to support a City of Madison Back from the Brink (BftB) Resolution. It calls on the federal government to honor the Nonproliferation Treaty of 1970 (NPT), embrace the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) of 2021 and take the following steps to reduce the risk of nuclear war: Actively pursue a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals. Renounce the option of using nuclear weapons first End the president’s sole, unchecked authority to launch a nuclear attack. Take U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger (high) alert. Cancel the plan to replace the entire U.S. arsenal with enhanced weapons. Madison, Wisconsin declared itself a nuclear free zone in a 1983 ordinance and passed a proclamation in 2019 commemorating August 6th as Hiroshima Day and August 9th as Nagasaki Day. The 2019 proclamation also called on the US to live up to its obligations under the 1970 Non-Proliferation Treaty and cancel the nuclear weapons modernization program. We are asking for the City to make a financial commitment that aligns with its history of advocacy for nuclear disarmament. The Madison Back from the Brink Resolution includes a pledge by the City to end investments in and contracts with companies involved in nuclear weapons production such as those listed in the 2022 Don’t Bank on the Bomb “Hall of Shame”. We look forward to developing a workable plan with City of Madison staff. Over sixty-five US cities have passed the Back from the Brink Resolution. Fifteen US cities have so far passed resolutions committing themselves to nuclear weapon free investments and/or contracts. For additional information, see links below: -12/2022 Background on Back from the Brink. – Summary of Divestment Information – PSR Wisconsin Back from the Brink web page We are eagerly awaiting your support of this Resolution. WNPJ + VFP Book Reading + Annual Ramadan Interfaith Iftar + WNPJ’s Spring Assembly Invitation + other statewide events SPOTLIGHT on WNPJ member groups MADISON Sat Apr 1st, 2:30 - 4 pm Veterans for Peace 25 Sponsored Book Reading: "Beyond the Badge-Reflection of an ExCop". Urban League of Greater Madison, 2222 South Park Street. Rob Zaleski and David Couper will read from "Beyond the Badge-Reflection of an ExCop", answer questions and invite discussion. When he stepped down in 1993 after 21 contentious, but highly successful years as the police chief in Madison, Wisconsin, David Couper was widely regarded as one of the most influential law enforcement officials in Wisconsin’s history. But little was known about his private life—or what motivated him to transform a paramilitary-type department into one that emphasized community relations; and to hire a large number of women and people of color, dramatically changing the complexion of the department. In 2020—nearly three decades after his shocking decision to resign and become an Episcopal priest—the former Marine met with award-winning columnist Rob Zaleski for a series of lively and provocative interviews that lift the veil on his private life and explain for the first time the reasons behind his many controversial decisions. He also talks about his unstable upbringing in the Twin Cities, the personal tragedies he’s endured, and his evolution into one of the most inspiring human rights activists Wisconsin has known. - The barbarism of settlers towards Palestinians hits home....
....as Cassandra Dixon, a peace activist from WNPJ member organization Mary House, was beaten by an Israeli settler and hospitalized a few weeks ago. She’s there to protect the children in the Palestinian village of Tuba as they walk to school. Tuba is in Masafer Yatta, the South Hebron Hills region of occupied West Bank. It’s slated for demolition and has been under constant harassment by Israeli settlers and soldiers. With help from Congressman Pocan, Senator Baldwin has been in contact with the State Department and urging investigation and consequences to the settler who harmed Cassandra. It’s hoped that this horrible act may bring attention and help to the plight of the Palestinians there. Here is the Action Alert Cassandra has prepared for us: https://www.wnpj.org/post/action-alert-from-cassandra-dixon-contact-for-wnpj-s-member-group-mary-house Please email Tammy Baldwin at https://www.baldwin.senate.gov/contact/contact-tammy Thank Senator Baldwin and encourage her office to continue to monitor the complaint. We want the US Consulate to visit Cassandra in Tuba to witness the threat of violence and human rights abuses caused by the expansion of the illegal Israeli outpost of Havat Ma’on We will also request updated written reports from the State Department, as we express our gratitude for her office’s continued vigilance in this matter. Thank you for signing on when it comes to you. Heal quickly Cassandra! And thank you.
- Action Alert from Cassandra Dixon, contact for WNPJ's member group Mary House
I have had a challenging couple of weeks here in Palestine. I was attacked by a settler on March 7. The settler has been identified now, and I am hoping there may be legal consequences, which would be unusual for a settler. I got fantastic medical care here, and am doing well. If you would like to contact congress asking that they follow up and hold the settlers accountable for violent attacks against Palestinians and internationals, there is information at the end of this email, and if you would like to share this with anyone here is a statement. Thank You Cassandra ******************************************** I am a citizen of the US currently visiting Palestine. I’m 64 years old. On March 7, I and another international were attacked by Israeli settlers while standing on the outskirts of the Palestinian village of Tuba in Masafer Yatta. I was hit from behind, hard, with a large stick, and my companion was chased and threatened by a settler with an iron bar. The settler who hit me fractured my skull and caused a bleed in my brain. This is what the colonialism of Israeli settlers looks like for Palestinian families living in Masafer Yatta in the southernmost end of the West Bank. Supported by Israeli military and Police, settlers from the many settlements and illegal outposts in Masafer Yatta are systematically stealing Palestinian grazing land, destroying crops, and violently forcing people from their lands. To be here now in these 15 villages is to witness ethnic cleansing in real time. In addition to daily settler threats, attacks, land theft, property destruction and violence, the area’s 1300 residents, more than half of them children, are facing imminent forced removal from their homes to make way for the use of their lands by the Israeli military as a firing zone. An Israeli high court decision in May of 2022 ended a years long legal battle by residents for the right to remain, and now the largest forced relocation of Palestinians since 1967 could happen at any moment. Israeli forces have already demolished schools, homes, roads, wells, olive trees and agricultural buildings, and delivered demolition orders to every single structure. As US taxpayers we contribute more than 8 million US dollars a day to the state of Israel. This is what we are buying. The strangulation of villages that are pinned down between illegal outposts. The shepherds forced to sell sheep to buy feed because they cannot access the land they planted a month ago. Women who face settler attacks while trying to reach a hospital in labor. Children who watched as their classrooms were demolished by Israeli forces with their desks and papers still inside. Families waking to the sight of entire olive groves burned or uprooted in the night by settlers. A young man about to be married shot and paralyzed by Israeli soldiers while attempting to save his village’s only generator from confiscation. The death of a beloved elderly man run over and dragged by a heavy equipment trailer during a police raid to confiscate cars in his village. The humans living in Masafer Yatta desperately need the world to witness the bitterness of colonialism in their fields and olive groves. They desperately need for us to pay attention. If you would like to help: Since the attack Senator Tammy Baldwin’s office has been surprisingly helpful in contacting the state department and I hope that they will continue to push them to communicate with the Israeli police and insist on legal consequences for the settler, as they may have some impact on the safety of Tuba Village. For friends in Wisconsin, If you would like to help, please consider contacting Baldwin’s washinoffice through this link and asking for the following: https://www.baldwin.senate.gov/contact/contact-tammy 1) Thank them for their attention to the attack. 2) Ask that they continue to monitor the complaint in Israel and let the Israeli police know that we expect legal consequences for the settlers involved in the attack. 3) Request that the US consulate make a visit to Tuba in order to understand the threat of violence and human rights abuses caused by expansion of the illegal Israeli outpost of Havat Ma’on. 4) Ask them to continue to request updates and a written report from the state department. 5) Express your appreciation for their attention to this matter and add that you hope this will lead to greater attention by the Senator in the future to the reality of life on the ground under what is increasingly becoming an Apartheid regime that the US needs to start holding accountable, especially given out current level of aid to Israel. Contacts to the state department from other congressional representatives would also be very helpful, however with Tammy Baldwin you can mention that I am a constituent of hers. - WNPJ member groups, alerts and events for the week of March 19th
Alert from Safe Skies, Clean Water WI:A ttention All Safe Skies Protecters! There is something significant we can do right now here in Wisconsin to make the world a safer place for all. We can stop the F-35 nuclear-capable fighter jets from being stationed at Truax Field in Madison, which experts say would make Madison a nuclear target. But time is running out. The killer jets are scheduled to arrive this coming May, so we less than two months to turn the tide. We need all hands on deck if we are to succeed. We need to exert as much public pressure as possible on our Governor, County Executive and Senator Baldwin. These are the three people who have the power to prevent this abomination. Safe Skies wants to implement two general strategies which we will briefly summarize here. Strategy 1: Save Our Children Campaign There are 59 schools and daycares within three miles of Truax Field! A substantial body of scientific research indicates that military jet noise can result in hearing disruption and hearing loss, which affects children’s attention, concentration and memory. This impacts their reading and math comprehension, which can cascade into poor overall academic performance and lack of motivation. Chronic exposure to high levels of aircraft noise can also exacerbate symptoms of anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in children and adults. Strategy 2: Nonviolent Direct Action This is not the time to be shy or meek. It is time to be bold and courageous. Whether you are more comfortable reaching out to others to get them involved, helping to disrupt the status quo, or offering support to disruptors, all are equally important right now. You may want to consider venturing outside of your comfort zone. Safe Skies, Midwest Catholic Workers, and Madison World BEYOND War will be hosting events during the Faith & Resistance Gathering, from March 24th to 27th – addressing F35s and more. Learn more about the public events & RSVP here: https://www.safeskiescleanwaterwi.org/save-the-date-march-24-27-catholic-worker-faith-resistance-gathering-no-f-35s/ Or, call or email Safe Skies organizer, Tom Boswell, and we will connect you to other people and get you involved. tomboswell2002@yahoo.com – 608/718-7312 safeskiescleanwaterwi.org *************************************** WISDOM SEEKING CANDIDATES impacted by lack of commutations of sentences in Wisconsin In efforts to raise awareness of the lack of commutations of sentences in the state of Wisconsin, WISDOM is seeking a case to lift up to the attention of the public and the Governor’s office. If you would like to present your incarcerated loved one as a possible candidate for the initial publication, send the following information to commutationsubcommittee@gmail.com by March 24th, 2023. - Discussion of the book "David Couper: Beyond the Badge: Reflections of an ex-cop" 4/1/23
Join David Couper and Rob Zaleski in a reading and discussion of the book David Couper: Beyond the Badge: Reflections of an ex-cop by Rob Zaleski Saturday April 1st, 2:30-3:30 pm, Urban League, 2222 South Park Street, Madison When he stepped down in 1993 after 21 contentious, but highly successful years as the police chief in Madison, Wisconsin, David Couper was widely regarded as one of the most influential law enforcement officials in Wisconsin’s history. - White House Call-In Campaign: Remove Cuba from State Sponsors of Terrorism List
We invite you to join us in National Call In Days to the White House to remove Cuba from the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT), on March 15 & 16. The call-in campaign will be a great complement to the other plans underway among organizations to pressure for the removal of Cuba from the SSOT List. The Call In: Wednesday & Thursday, March 15th & 16th (W.H. phone line open Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11am to 3pm EST). Mobilizing on those days, groups & organizations will use their own tools or tools that can be made available to them to: Call White House Line between 11 am and 3 pm EST Use the Contact Form on the White House website Use an automated email system to the White House (EveryAction and ActionNetwork) with consistent subject line Twitter Instagram FaceBook Here’s a helpful toolkit that provides the following script, background on the State Sponsors of Terrorism List, Graphics, a template Press Release and more! Call the White House: (202) 456-1111 Suggested script: My name is [FIRST and LAST NAME] from [CITY and STATE] I am calling to ask you, President Biden, to direct the State Department to remove Cuba from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism immediately. As one of his last acts as United States President, Donald Trump placed Cuba on the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism, the SSOT. The State Department reasserted this designation on February 27. This action added incredible hardship to an already long list of hardships for the Cuban people created by the 243 sanctions he already had imposed, especially on top of the Covid pandemic and 60 years of U.S. trade embargo. Since taking office you have had every chance to remove Cuba from the SSOT. Worldwide, heads of state and leaders in public, religious and civic sectors have called for you to remove Cuba from the SSOT. Cuba was placed on the list supposedly because of its role in negotiations between the Colombian government and the ELN guerrilla groups, but even the President of Colombia has said there is no justification for Cuba being on the SSOT. I am joining my voice to many others in calling for you, President Joseph Biden, to remove Cuba from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism immediately, as you have the authority and ability to do. Please take action now. Thank you. If you call, and you cannot get through, you can post on the White House Contact Form: https://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/ Alert sent to WNPJ by Peace Action of WI http://www.peaceactionwi.org/
