- Stop the F35s in the Crossfit Games - Dane County!
Safe Skies Clean Air WI asks us to contact members of the Dane County Board and let them know ....before their August meeting .....that we want them to add a restriction to the upcoming contract with Crossfit to prohibit military flyovers. Concerns include air quality, noise, and cost, and that the Crossfit Games is a private entity and military jets should not be used for entertainment at community expense. - Say “No” to Cluster Bombs
The United States has made the decision to send cluster bombs to Ukraine. Cluster bombs carry canisters of explosives designed to detonate on hard surfaces, but do not always detonate on contact. There are fragments of cluster bombs used in Vietnam still killing and harming people. More than 120 countries have banned them. The US, Russia, Ukraine and Turkey did not. They have been widely used in the war in Ukraine by both sides. Our citizenry needs to decide where we stand. Are we too weak to demand a peaceful resolution? Or are we too cynical to believe it is possible? Let your elected officials know where you stand by signing this American Friends Service Committee petition https://afsc.org/action/tell-congress-dont-send-cluster-munitions-ukraine
- Caroline Quarlls Day * July 22, 3:30 * Johnson's Park, MLK
Caroline Quarlls was a sixteen year old who escaped slavery and the first known person to travel the Underground Railroad through Wisconsin. She made her way to Canada where she met and married another freed slave, Allen Watkins, and together they raised six children in Sandwich (now Windsor), Ontario, Canada. This invitation is sent to Abolitionists to honor her: “You are kindly welcome to Johnsons Park at the southwest corner of 17th and Fond Du Lac Avenue in Milwaukee, on Saturday, July 22, 3:30 PM. This is the location of the Brown Farm; a place where, during her escape to Canada, Caroline Quarlles found shelter. Dr. Clayborn Benson, from the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, will be providing historical background about this place in Milwaukee’s Abolitionist history. We will also speak about Abolitionist issues of today.” On another note: a recent vandal attack on the Wisconsin Black Historical Society has initiated the need for funds. - Please Oppose Cluster Bombs - For the Sake of Family Farmers, Rural Kids, & Peaceful Reconstruction!
From John Peck, WNPJ Board member and contact for the member group, Family Farm Defenders. Greetings, As many of you may know, the Biden White House recently approved the transfer of cluster bombs to Ukraine. Here is one story about this: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-66144153 The U.S. has not joined the majority of nations in the world to sign the Convention on Cluster Munitions (including many of our allies - the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Spain to mention a few). The U.S. should not be producing and transferring any indiscriminate weapons (cluster bombs, land mines) that disproportionately harm civilians in any conflict. Now is a good time for those who care about the future livelihood of rural people in Ukraine (or elsewhere) to contact their Congressional representatives, senators, and the White House to oppose this decision. Many elected officials - both Democrats and Republicans - have already expressed their opposition. You can add your voice by visiting this website: https://afsc.org/action/tell-congress-dont-send-cluster-munitions-ukraine The "dud" rate on these munitions is incredibly high. They are scattered over a vast area (several football fields in most cases). The ribbons attached to cluster bombs often fatally attract the attention of children, and the unexploded bomblets persist for decades, killing farmers who are cultivating their fields, people foraging for firewood or mushrooms, even tourists who are just rambling. I've been to many countries and seen the horrific byproduct of such indiscriminate weapons on rural people and wildlife myself. Zimbabwean elephants that were maimed stepping on a landmine leftover from the apartheid regime in Rhodesia. Peasants in East Timor that were crippled by deadly ordinance due to the Indonesian occupation. Friends in Vets for Peace telling me about grisly encounters between children in Iraq and Afghanistan that played with a cluster bomblet. One of the principles of food sovereignty is social peace - and the use of cluster bombs and land mines is a clear violation of such. Ukraine deserves support in its effort to resist Russia's invasion (with hopefully a peaceful diplomatic resolution), but providing U.S. cluster bombs to contaminate the Ukrainian countryside for decades into the future is not a humane option. They should be banned - period. Best - John John E. Peck Executive Director Family Farm Defenders, P.O. Box 1772, Madison, WI 53701 tel./fax. 608-260-0900 http://www.familyfarmers.org
- Sign on to the WI Poor People's Letter - a Moral Declaration + WNPJ events for the week of July 16t
A Moral Declaration for America from the Poor People's Campaign: To the people of this nation, our struggles are inextricably linked. The extremists are winning by default and by shallow margins of victory. We must use all the tools available to us to fight voter suppression, and we must also commit to mobilizing the 20 million poor and low-wealth people who did not vote in the past election because they have been disabused of their importance to our democracy. History teaches us that where false hatred fueled by greed has caused government leaders to falter in favor of a few, moral social justice movements have always stepped up to steer the nation back on course. Until that miraculous day when the rights of human beings are respected without the need for enforcement, it is up to the people of moral conscience to provide the unwritten checks and balances necessary for good governance. This nation is ours to make over and over again for as long as justice takes. Forward Together, Not One Step Back! Bishop William J. - Action Alert from WISDOM!
A few months ago, we delivered a letter to Governor Evers, asking him to use his constitutional powers to commute the sentences of two men: Israel Saldana and Michael Maldonado who are two of the very many people who have been in Wisconsin prisons too long. You can read the letter here and learn about Israel and Michael. The Governor's office has acknowledged receipt of the letter and has indicated that they are looking into it. Today, we are asking you to let the Governor know that there are many of us in Wisconsin who want him to use his constitutional authority to begin to consider commuting sentences. It is part of our system of checks and balances, in which the Executive can provide a balance to extremes, like the sentences received by Michael and Israel. There are two ways for you to get involved today. First, you can add your name to the electronic petition here. Please scan or take a picture of any paper petitions you gather and submit them to wisdomcommutation@gmail.com. Sign the electronic petition Download a paper petition We also urge you to write Governor Evers a card or letter requesting that he commute the sentences of Michael and Israel and establish a procedure for reviewing additional cases similar to theirs. The address for the letter or card is: Governor Tony Evers 115 E. Capitol, Suite 1 Madison, WI 53702 If you have a group or social justice committee, you can take half an hour in one of your meetings to ask everyone to send a message. If you need examples of these letters, please reach out to wisdomcommutation@gmail.com Let Governor Evers know that if he does the wise and fair thing, the people of Wisconsin will have his back. Too many people have been in Wisconsin for far too long. Some were children when they were sentenced. Some received disproportionate sentences. Many, like Michael and Israel, have worked very hard to change their lives and to be ready to make a contribution when they get a second chance. It's time for common sense to outweigh political fear. In Solidarity, David Liners office@wisdomwisconsin.org

Silent Rally and Public Hearing Weds. July 12 at 11am 301 Hyde Park Ave, Waukesha This Wed, July 12th, the Waukesha school district will hold a public hearing at Noon to decide on the superintendent's recommendation to terminate the employment of Melissa Tempel, the first grade teacher who has been on paid administrative leave since April. On leave because she publicly voiced her concerns about the district prohibiting her students from singing "Rainbowland". The Alliance for Education in Waukesha are asking folks to join a First Amendment-focused protest outside the admin building (301 Hyde Park Ave) starting at 11am. For the purpose of the hearing next week, please focus on the First Amendment issue. They are asking people to wear black…to show that silencing people's first amendment hurts everyone regardless of where an individual stands on gay and other cultural issues. For many years, homeowners and businesses have been using the sunlight that falls on their rooftops as a source of electricity. Rooftop solar systems operate in parallel with the utility grid, allowing customers to export energy they don’t use to the utility. A billing mechanism called net metering supports such systems by enabling rooftop solar owners to bank their unused electricity and receive the retail energy credit for the excess energy generated. Learn about dangerous proposals that would dampen future customer investments in solar power. VIA ZOOM: Register in advance for the meeting by visiting the website https://350wisconsin.org/monthly-meetings/ . After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting via computer, tablet, or smartphone. Michael Vickerman, Clean Energy Deployment Manager for RENEW Wisconsin, will speak to us about Madison Gas and Electric’s and Alliant Energy’s proposals to raise rates and alter net metering for solar customers. Learn how you can get involved. https://350wisconsin.org/monthly-meetings/ ******************************************************* If your group would like to get your events posted in the weekly e-bulletin – JOIN US! https://www.wnpj.org/membership ******************************************** ***************************** WNPJ member groups can sign up for a Saturday opportunity to TABLE at the Madison Farmers Market – this Spring and summer at the Capitol Square. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4daaa929a5fac34-wnpj#/ The Farmers Market opening date is April 15th – 7 am to 1 pm …and runs through the Fall on Saturdays.
