The intro is free, as are all of the ten classes in the series, and will be held virtually via zoom. This is a wonderful program dedicated to an individual's discovery of inner strength. It is suitable for organizations and groups to share in community. You need to register for the class in advance at this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZ0tcOuhqzgoGteqOQ0khZnlkZwU6eT2CYah Two members of WNPJ offer their perspectives on the Peace Classes: From Judy M: I look forward to spending an hour in community digging deep to find the peace that resides in each one of us. Moderated by a skilled volunteer with The Peace Education Program, we watch videos, take time to reflect, and are assigned special projects to think about. This program is free - and powerful! I especially enjoy the videos, often filmed in foreign lands, showing the connection all humans have in this quest for peace. From Timothy C: The format, rhythm, and tone of the classes make for a very peaceful experience. The short videos are a beautiful blend of peaceful imagery, music, and the clear and irrefutable message that the power to be at peace is within us all. The opportunities to reflect and share our experience help solidify the things that we are learning. I'm very much looking forward to continuing this course and recommend it to others who are seeking inner peace. Brown Deer Public Library, West Brown Deer Road. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) has proposed a new rule that could drastically reduce the number of gun sales that may take place without a background check. This could be a massive step forward in keeping guns out of the hands of people who, by law, are prohibited from owning them. Before agencies adopt rules, they accept comments from the public. Right now, the ATF is accepting comments on this proposed rule. But here’s the rub: the pro-gun lobby is working to flood the ATF with “public” comments opposed to this lifesaving rule! We need to show the ATF where the public really stands! And that’s why it’s critical that you weigh in. Reserve your spot now. • URGENT Action Alert from Madison Rafah Sister City Project

Hello everyone, We don't normally send this kind of email to you, however, the people in Gaza desperately need our support as they are being demonized in order to facilitate murderous violence and the threat of mass expulsion. Also, emboldened as the world looks elsewhere, settlers are on the rampage in the West Bank depopulating and then razing a series of small villages; scores of people have been killed, arrested or injured. Our government is making this possible with our tax money, throwing its complete military and political support behind Israel. The hypocritical facade of "concern for both sides" is being abandoned. Please view, post and circulate this message from a young woman trapped in Gaza, and this one from our friend Ahmed Abu Artema, who visited us a few years back here in Madison, also now sheltering under the bombs. Then please take action. Attend demonstrations near you, or consider organizing them. Get information out as much as you can to counteract the terrible pro-war and pro-Israel message now dominating the mainstream Western media. Some good sources of news here. AND...EVERYONE should call their representatives. There is an alert at the end from the US Campaign for Palestinian Rights with a tool to do that. You can call over the weekend and leave a message. If you can't get through or mailboxes are full, try another office or use their online contact forms. KEEP CALLING to counter the massive pressure from the other side in support of Israel's war. Here are direct numbers for some in Wisconsin. Rep. Mark Pocan 608-258-9800 Madison 202-225-2906 DC Rep. Gwen Moore (414) 297-1140 Milwaukee (202) 225-4572 DC Sen. Tammy Baldwin All offices listed here Sen. Ron Johnson offices here And here's another option: This coming Tuesday, Oct. 17 you can register to join Code Pink's informational session and emergency Capitol calling party. Thank you, Barb O. Madison-Rafah Sister-City Proj<rafahsistercity@yahoo.com ps--If you are in Madison, please come to our event tomorrow, Sunday October 15 2-4 pm at Tenney Park Shelter; vigil at end so bring your flags, kuffiyehs and signs.

VIRTUAL Tues Oct 10th, 5:30 pm Crawford Stewardship Project's CAFO Committee meeting. CSP will discuss and provide information about township “CAFO Operations Ordinances”. Protect your township from industrial ag. These are becoming the go-to way for our rural communities to set higher standards for the industry than the minimal regulations provided by state permitting and the restrictive Livestock Siting Law. Our struggle to work through the existing state and county permitting process for Roth Feeder Pig II has shown clearly that if we want to address the many community concerns about these operations, other avenues must be pursued. Most importantly, these ordinances must be done proactively, as any existing permits will be grandfathered in, so don’t wait until a proposal hits to act! Contact for zoom links: Crawford Stewardship Project <csp.county@gmail.com VIRTUAL Tues Oct 10th, 7 - 8:15 pm Native Book Discussion: The Round House: A Novel - (on-line event with Sinsinawa)—Join Eric Anglada, Sinsinawa's Ecological Programming Coordinator, via Zoom to discuss Louise Erdrich's novel. Erdrich transports readers to Ojibwe territory in North Dakota. It is an exquisitely told story of a boy on the cusp of manhood who seeks justice and understanding in the wake of a terrible crime that upends and forever transforms his family. Riveting and suspenseful, this is arguably Erdrich’s most accessible novel. Registration ends October 9 and the fee is $10 per person. Contact Arrangements at 608-748-4411 or visit our website at https://sinsinawa.org/moundcenter for more information. MADISON Wed Oct 11th, 12:30 - 1:30 pm Presentation by Doug Bradley “We Gotta Get Out of This Place: The Soundtrack of the Vietnam War” , Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ. This is a free, in-person event, part of their monthly luncheon program. To register, please email Steve Sheets at erab1958@icloud.com . “We Gotta Get Out of This Place: The Soundtrack of the Vietnam War” places popular music at the heart of the American experience in Vietnam. The presentation explores how and why U.S. troops turned to music as a way of connecting to each other and the World back home and of coping with the complexities of the war they had been sent to fight. It also demonstrates that music was important for every group of Vietnam veterans—black and white, Latino and Native American; men and women; officers and “grunts”—whose personal reflections drive the book’s narrative. • Madison is now the third largest US city to limit investments nuclear weapons producers!

The Madison City Council voted unanimously in favor of a “Back from the Brink” nuclear disarmament-divestment resolution on 10/3/23. Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR) Wisconsin and 16 other organizations urged the City to pass the Resolution. Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway and 12 Alders co-sponsored the Resolution. See the Mayor’s blog: www.cityofmadison.com/mayor/blog/divesting-from-nuclear-weapons Madison is now the third largest city in the US to limit investments in and/or contracts with nuclear weapon producers. It is the 76th US municipality to call on the US to take us “back from the brink” of nuclear war by working with other nuclear states to reach a verifiable agreement to eliminate nuclear weapons and by: -Renouncing the option of using nuclear weapons first. -Ending the president’s sole, unchecked authority to launch a nuclear attack. -Taking U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger alert. -Canceling the plan to replace the entire U.S. arsenal with enhanced weapons. Since Presidents Reagan and Gorbachev met in 1986, the number of nuclear weapons in the world has decreased from 60,000 to 13,000. But nuclear weapons have spread from five nations in 1965 to nine nations today. Climate change resulting in droughts is leading to mass migration and conflicts over water access. The US and Russia are engaged in a new nuclear arms race and China is trying to catch up. Russia has threatened to use tactical nuclear weapons in Ukraine. North Korea has threatened a nuclear attack if the US places nuclear bombers or submarines in South Korea. After the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons was adopted in 2017, Americans began a grassroots “Back from the Brink” campaign to convince US leaders to take nuclear disarmament seriously and join the Treaty. “What we do can make a difference”, says Ann Behrmann, MD. “The nuclear freeze movement of the 1980’s led to a complete change in President Reagan’s thinking and to talks with President Gorbachev.” The Madison Resolution also limits investments in and contracts with the world’s major nuclear weapons producers, making Madison the first city in the Midwest to do so. Oakland, CA, Berkeley, CA and Takoma Park, MD have been limiting investments and contracts since the 1990’s. In the last several years, other US cities have followed, including NYC, NY, Cambridge, MA, Corvallis, OR and Santa Barbara CA. “Madison was one of the first American cities to declare itself a nuclear free zone in 1983. With this Resolution, Madison builds on its legacy and makes a financial commitment that matches its long-standing opposition to nuclear weapons”, says Paula Rogge, MD. The Madison, WI Back from the Brink resolution was co-sponsored by 350 Madison, Dane County Chapter of United Nations Association, First Unitarian Society Social Justice Ministry, Four Lakes Green Party, Friends Meeting of Madison, Interfaith Peace Working Group, Madison Mennonite Church, Our Wisconsin Revolution, Physicians for Social Responsibility – Wisconsin, Prairie Unitarian Universalist Society Social Action Committee, Progressive Dane, Raging Grannies of Madison-Dane County, General Synod of the United Church of Christ, Veterans for Peace - Chapter 25, Wisconsin Network for Peace, Justice and Sustainability, Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom - Madison, and World BEYOND War - Madison Chapter.

Our democracy has been undermined by big money, voter suppression, lies, corruption, and now the threat that the duly elected Justice Janet Protasiewicz could be impeached for no real reason. It is hard to believe the depths that they go to will to hold onto their slipping power. We, the people, are rising and we must not let a those in power continue to erode our democracy. To change everything it takes everyone…right? Well…not quite. Movement breakthroughs often come about by winning people over selectively. But how do we know whom to select? Seth Jensen, will introduce a tool called the Spectrum of Allies, which helps activists determine where to pitch their message for maximum effect. Seth learned the tool when a national 350.org trainer came to Madison more than a decade ago, and he is eager to share it with all of us. Register in advance for the meeting here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting via computer, tablet, or smartphone. Seth Jensen has been active with 350 Wisconsin from the beginning. Back in August 2011, he was arrested in protests led by Bill McKibben against the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline. Seth credits the feminist movement for teaching him the value of community-based organizing. Seth is co-lead of the Divest & Defund Team, and balances his time between the roles of climate activist and massage therapist. 350Wisconsin@350wisconsin.org MADISON Sun Oct 1st, 7 - 8 pm Candlelight Vigil for Peace in Ukraine for People of Faith and Conscience. Time for you to take action, Madison! As you know, the F-35 fighter jets are named as part of the U.S. strategic nuclear triad. Community efforts that make it clear that we do not condone nuclear weapons can build into a larger movement. And maybe, just maybe, we can ultimately make those horrible jets go away. But we definitely need to prevent nuclear war. Back from Brink Resolutions call on our federal government to: · Actively pursue a verifiable agreement among nuclear-armed states to eliminate their nuclear arsenals. Renounce the option of using nuclear weapons first. · End the president's sole, unchecked authority to launch a nuclear attack. · Take U.S. nuclear weapons off hair-trigger (launch ready) alert. · Cancel the plan to replace the entire U.S. arsenal with enhanced weapons. · The City of Madison Back from the Brink Resolution also commits Madison to nuclear weapon-free investments and contracts. The BftB recommendations were developed by members of the Union of Concerned Scientists and Physicians for Social Responsibility USA in consultation with experts on nuclear security. The financial recommendations are the result of research on other cities that have committed to nuclear weapon free investments/contracts, and the hard work of the Madison Finance Director and City staff. If you have already contacted your Alder, contact them one more time and urge them to vote on 10/3 for the Back from the Brink Resolution. If you have not already contacted your Alder, this is the time to do it! Nuclear disarmament sometimes feels like an impossible goal. But the grassroots Nuclear Freeze movement of the 1980's led to negotiations between Russia and the US that resulted in a decrease in the world arsenal from 60,000 to today's 12,500 warheads. VIRTUAL Mon Sept 25th, 7 pm Zoom Meeting on Understanding "Wisconsin Rights of Nature Campaign." Organized by WISDOM. About a year ago, we launched the "Wisconsin Rights of Nature Campaign." After a couple of general presentations, a core group of about 25 leaders has continued to meet regularly, to better understand Rights of Nature, to develop some materials and resources, and to pilot some activities. We now have a website, a brochure, and are on the verge of having a Rights of Nature resolution passed by the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors. We invite you to join us for this Zoom event to learn more about the campaign and what has been done. More importantly we want to share a vision for the future of the campaign and show ways, large and small, that people can get involved. Rights of Nature is a movement rooted in the indigenous community that calls for legal recognition and protection of the natural world. It is a recognition that lakes, rivers, forests and animals have a right to exist, to evolve and to thrive. They also have a right to remedies when they are harmed. It is an end to the dangerous assumption that the natural world is ours to consume and exploit, without recognizing its intrinsic value. We need only look at global warming, mass extinction and water crises of all kinds to recognize that our assumptions have to change. Register for the event. One thing you can do immediately is to sign our petition below urging elected officials to adopt rights of nature laws, and share it with friends and neighbors. Sign the petition . Wisconsin born into the political and cultural quiescence of the 1950s, Jon Melrod grew up in apartheid-like Washington D.C. SEEKING ASYLUM is an award-winning feature documentary that bears witness to the endless deterrents migrants face when petitioning for asylum in the United States. In a system that has been designed for failure, we follow one woman’s journey as she searches for protection for herself and her children. Many people view getting to the United States as the final hurdle in the migration journey, but we quickly learn that once in the U.S., the fight has just begun. During one of the most uncertain times in our country's history, Seeking Asylum documents the challenges asylum seekers face and shows why asylum is an integral part of the American Dream that we cannot afford to lose. • Badger Army Groundwater Cleanup Plan Omits PFAS!

In a formal letter to WDNR Secretary Adam Payne today, Citizens for Safe Water Around Badger (CSWAB) asks that the Department require the U.S. Army, as the acknowledged responsible party, to incorporate PFAS and other emerging contaminants in its pending community-wide groundwater remedy selection at and near the former Badger Army Ammunition Plant lands in rural Sauk County. Badger is the source of three separate groundwater contaminant plumes that have all migrated beyond the plant boundary into nearby residential areas. CSWAB points to the Department’s August 17, 2020 letter which requires the U.S. Army to include evaluation of PFAS and other emerging contaminants “as early in the cleanup process as possible, preferably during the site investigation phase.” A follow-up letter to the Army on September 9, 2020 affirms the Department’s opinion that there is “considerable uncertainty regarding potential discharges of PFAS” at Badger. Now, three years later, in August 2023, the Army submitted a draft remedial action plan to the WDNR for addressing community-wide groundwater contamination but the plan omits PFAS altogether. As a result, the Army’s proposal fails to define the degree and extent of PFAS and other emerging contaminants in groundwater – the community’s sole source of drinking water. CSWAB asks that the WDNR take immediate steps to assure that (1) drinking water wells near Badger are regularly and promptly tested for PFAS and other emerging contaminants, and (2) that the pending site-wide groundwater remedy selection and environmental investigations fully encompass all potential sources for PFAS contamination including hazardous waste sites in the Town of Merrimac. This is not the first time that residents have asked for off-site testing. In September 2018, more than 100 people, including members of the local Restoration Advisory Board, co-signed a resolution organized by CSWAB asking that the Army test all public and private drinking water systems within a four-mile radius of Badger for PFAS. The resolution asked that the Army include PFAS analysis in its then-upcoming testing of approximately 300 residential wells near the former military base. The requested testing never occurred. A complete copy of CSWAB’s 7-page letter is posted here. - Laura Olah | Executive Director Citizens for Safe Water Around Badger | www.CSWAB.org E12629 Weigand’s Bay South, Merrimac, WI 53561 P: 608 643 3124 | E: info@cswab.org www.facebook.com/cswab.org | www.twitter.com/CSWAB
