On Rendering Uninhabitable: The War on Palestine and Lebanon and its Environmental Effects Friday Dec 13th at 11am Virtual event - 'On Rendering Uninhabitable: The War on Palestine and Lebanon and its Environmental Effects'. Please join the Middle East Section (MES) of the American Anthropological Association . Register HERE . Israel's genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and its expansion of killing and destruction in Lebanon have targeted the ecologies and environments that sustain the livelihood of Palestinians and Lebanese. In Gaza, Palestinians face the destruction of water infrastructure and agricultural land, even as they face catastrophic levels of hunger under siege. In South Lebanon, olive trees and the harvest season have been burned and threatened. In both Lebanon and Gaza, the use of white phosphorus, the inordinate amount of asbestos-poisoned rubble produced in the destruction of the built environment, the movement of animals because of different patterns of human inhabitation will all have long-term effects on the inhabitability of the land, affecting all the region, including Israel. Yet, Palestinians and Lebanese have insisted to continue to find ways to inhabit the ruins produced, to grow food, and tend to all of those living. This panel will examine these environmental tactics of war and their long-term effects, along with ground-up tactics of survival and sumud, for it is the latter that holds the key to rebuilding and cultivating futures on the day after. Oral History Project with Baraboo Acts Coalition The Oral History project, an idea originating from the Baraboo High School’s Social Justice Club, has expanded to include Immigration Stories as well. There are two powerful stories recorded by Joan Wheeler of immigrants living and thriving in our community. This is an ongoing project and we would love to add your story! Contact Baraboo Acts Coalition if you would like your story to be recorded. And a success to note - Refugee Resettlement Resolution Tabled Thanks to those of you for letting your county supervisors know your thoughts regarding the recent Refugee Resettlement Resolution . The presidential election is over, but the work of advancing, achieving, and protecting equality and liberation for LGBTQ+ Wisconsinites and Americans continues. While we continue to fight back and build a stronger movement for LGBTQ+ rights, our work must also involve rest, recuperation, time for community, and even creativity. Because we can only do the work if we care for ourselves and our community. With this in mind, we invite you to join Fair Wisconsin at one or more virtual creative processing workshops, offering attendees the opportunity to process your thoughts and emotions as we pause and recuperate in community. Each workshop will follow the same format: centering introduction, a grounding art experience, some writing time, and time for communal sharing, and will leave us better positioned to build our collective power. REGISTER HERE for the virtual event. Announcement sent to WNPJ by Abigail Swetz abigail.swetz@fairwisconsin.com Note: Fair Wisconsin is our newest 86th member organization! 12/10 @ 2pm-3pm:  WNPJ Environmental Justice Task Force zoom Monthly Meeting. We work to increase awareness and build connections among people and groups in Wisconsin to bring marginalized and frontline voices, understandings, and experiences to the forefront. We meet via zoom on the second Tuesday of the month at 2pm CT. If you are interested in joining, please contact Dena Eakles: dena.eakles@gmail.com 12/10 @ 6:30pm:  Webinar: Independent Prison Oversight: What It Would Mean for Wisconsin. The WISDOM Solitary and Conditions of Confinement workgroup, together with the Ladies of SCI, invite you to an important event. Unlike Wisconsin, some other states have an independent organization (or "ombudsman") that is responsible for monitoring what happens in the state's prisons. These oversight groups have unfettered access to go into any facility at any time, and to speak to any staff member or incarcerated person confidentially. This is very different from Wisconsin where the primary responsibility for investigating issues with the Department of Corrections lies with the Department of Corrections. Please join us to learn more about how Independent Oversight works in other places, and how to help the effort to get Wisconsin to join the ranks of those states that have some kind of external accountability for their prisons. Please click here to register for the webinar . When you do, you will get an email with a link to join us on Tuesday. office@wisdomwisconsin.org 12/12 @ 9am:  WDRT.org radio will air a conversation with Dr Sarah D'Onofrio and WNPJ Board member Dena Eakles. Listen live or on the web. We will discuss the dangers of bio digesters and the rise of co-digesters, which mix manure with inputs from outside the farm. These include food waste from various types of industrial food manufacturing such as pet food, slaughterhouses, breweries, and other waste. Most importantly we will discuss how digestate and biogas production negatively impacts water, soil, and air in surrounding communities and beyond. You can find the podcast at WDRT.org at "Conversations" or on WNPJ's Environmental Justice page following the show. dena.eakles@gmail.com 12/13 @ 11am:  WEBINAR: On Rendering Uninhabitable: The War on Palestine and Lebanon and its Environmental Effects. Please join the Middle East Section (MES) of the American Anthropological Association. This group has an interest in the peoples, cultures and histories of the Middle East. Register HERE. This panel will examine these environmental tactics of war and their long-term effects, along with ground-up tactics of survival and sumud, for it is the latter that holds the key to rebuilding and cultivating futures on the day after. Contact: Voces de la Frontera Madison Organizer stephaniejsa123@gmail.com WNPJ member groups are following a bill in the house and senate affecting nonprofits From Wisdom Wisconsin : The U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to take another vote on H.R. 9495 – Stop Terror-Financing and Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act – this week. Without our immediate, collective action, this legislation could pass and have far-reaching effects for organizations like WISDOM, Gamaliel, its affiliates, and partner organizations and result in the loss of their not-for-profit status simply by exercising their rights to free speech. According to supporters of H.R. 9495, this piece of legislation is simply meant to focus on nonprofits that support terrorist activities and was birthed in response to the conflicts on college campuses over the war in Gaza; however, a growing number of organizations, including civil rights, religious, reproductive health, immigrant rights, human rights, racial justice, LGBTQIA+, environmental, and educational organizations, describe this bill as legislation that would grant the executive branch broad and easily abused powers to swiftly revoke the tax-exempt status of a nonprofit by asserting that it is a “terrorist supporting organization.” Per the legislation, the Treasury Department could make the designation without any real due process and without having to produce evidence justifying the decision. In Solidarity, David Liners office@wisdomwisconsin.org And, an UPDATE 11/22: The good news is that Rep.Gwen Moore was responsive and changed her vote, opposing HR9495, a terrible bill which threatens non-profits with losing their tax exempt status for undefined "support of terrorism." It would allow the Treasury Secretary to act with no due process. In a Trump administration, support for a Gaza ceasefire could be enough grounds. The bad news is that the bill still passed and now goes to the Senate. Two things you can do: (1) Thank Gwen for listening and changing her vote. https://gwenmoore.house.gov/contact/ (2) Urge Tammy Baldwin to oppose it in the Senate. https://www.baldwin.senate.gov/contact/contact-tammy --- Veterans For Peace Milwaukee Chapter 102 vfpchapter102@gmail.com Learn more about this issue on this 4-minute story on NPR from 11/26! https://www.npr.org/2024/11/26/nx-s1-5205294/measure-would-strip-tax-exempt-status-from-nonprofits-deemed-supporters-of-terrorism WNPJ Member Group Events Click here  to see a listing of recurring Vigils across the state! All welcome. Questions? Contact Mary Kay Baum marykbaum@gmail.com Update on Line 5 from 350 Wisconsin On November 14, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) granted Canadian oil giant Enbridge Energy permits for its controversial plan to construct a new segment of its Line 5 oil pipeline in northern Wisconsin. The 70-year-old pipeline currently cuts across the heart of the Bad River Reservation, where it has been trespassing on Tribal land for more than a decade. In 2019, the Bad River Band of Lake Superior Chippewa filed a lawsuit in federal court to force its removal. Rather than shut down the aging pipeline, Enbridge applied for permits to build a new 40-mile section of pipeline around the perimeter of the Reservation that would allow its continued operation within the Bad River watershed. Midwest Environmental Advocates is currently providing legal representation to several organizations working to stop new construction on Line 5: League of Women Voters of Wisconsin, 350 Wisconsin and Sierra Club – Wisconsin Chapter. See their press release here . Emily Park, co-Executive Director of 350 Wisconsin, said, “At a time when climate change is undeniably one of the most urgent threats facing our planet, it is deeply troubling that the DNR would issue permits for the construction of new fossil fuel infrastructure. Prolonging the use of fossil fuels will increase the frequency and intensity of floods, droughts, heat waves, wildfires, new diseases, and extreme weather events. Instead of building infrastructure that facilitates more carbon emissions, we should be investing in renewable energy, sustainable transportation, and technologies that will help transition to a clean energy future.” Questions? contact@350wisconsin.org WNPJ Member Group Events Click here  to see a listing of recurring Vigils across the state! Now more than ever we’ll have to work harder to advocate on behalf of the United Nations and its goals, and double our efforts to align US policy with the norms and aspirations of the UN. Hope you can join our discussion on Monday. All welcome for this in-person meeting. The Sauk County Refugee Resettlement Referendum The Sauk County Board is voting on a Refugee Resettlement Referendum on Tuesday evening, October 15, at their regular County Board Meeting. Last month they voted to table the referendum, but one of the supervisors has brought it back on the agenda. Approving this referendum goes against Baraboo Acts Coalition’s vision of creating an open and affirming community where everyone belongs. And, more importantly, this is not an issue that falls within the jurisdiction of the Sauk County Board. If you know someone in Sauk County, we are asking you to have them call their Sauk County representative to share thoughts regarding this referendum and to ask their representative to vote no on the referendum, or at a minimum, table it again. Here are some suggested talking points to use during the conversation with their County Board Supervisor: Refugee resettlement is not an issue in Sauk County. Refugee resettlement falls outside of our county government authority The closest Refugee resettlement agency is in Dane County, 50 miles away There are currently fewer than 10 refugees in our county For more information regarding the referendum, read the WKOW article . General information: A refugee is someone who has been forced to flee their home country. Additionally, they have also been hand-selected by the Department of Homeland Security and screened by US agencies in an exhaustive process. Refugees are entrepreneurs, consumers, and taxpayers, contributing to economic growth, and often, creating jobs. Entrepreneurship among refugees is nearly 50 percent higher than among people born in the U.S. Welcoming refugees is an investment in our community, as over the long term, they pay on average $21,000 in taxes above the initial resettlement costs to our community. For more information regarding refugees, here are a few articles. In all these conflicts the United Nations calls for ceasefires, restraint, points out international law and norms and then provides and coordinates humanitarian aid and care for refugees. • WNPJ Member Events Around the State for the Week of October 7th

WNPJ + WI Peace WAVE + Gun Violence Prevention Summit + SAVE the date Oct 19th for WNPJ Annual Fall Assembly + November’s Referendum + other statewide events The WI Network for Peace and Justice is the umbrella non-profit organization supporting the work of 86 member groups around Wisconsin. Wisconsin Peace Wave - Tuesday, October 8th WNPJ, in remembering its origin as a network of organizations and individuals who united in a stand for peace at the time of the Gulf War, is inviting people from around the state to again stand together for peace. Whatever divides us must be secondary to our common goals and demands - diplomacy and peace. The US government and military agencies have supported Israel in its defense, but the ongoing slaughter of innocents and now the escalation into Lebanon cannot continue. US complicity and support of warfare must end. We are certain there are better ways to resolve conflict and recognize that we must make our voices heard. On Tuesday, October 8th, we invite everyone of conscience, regardless of political views, to make a statement for peace. We invite our member organizations to help create this wave of peace throughout our state. Welcome your allies, friends and communities to stand together. Wherever you are in Wisconsin, at whatever time works best – gather with colleagues and stand for PEACE! More information and details will be forthcoming. The presentation will provide an overview of air quality and extreme heat and its impact to the health in Dane County communities with a focus on health equity. In addition, the presenters will discuss emergency preparedness efforts to help reduce the potential health implications, and improve the ability of our community to respond as these events become more frequent due to the effects of climate change. While the speakers represent Dane County Public Health, this presentation should provide useful information for people living anywhere in Wisconsin about dealing with extreme heat, poor air quality and ways to prepare in communities for adverse weather events. 350 Wisconsin contact@350wisconsin.org 10/8 @ 2pm-3pm:   Monthly zoom call for WNPJ's Environmental Justice Check-In You are welcome to attend monthly zoom calls for WNPJ's Environmental Justice - Check-in. WISDOM contact:  office@wisdomwisconsin.org 10/8 @ Noon:   Webinar, Multifamily Metering: Updating the Rules to Accelerate Decarbonization and Energy Savings in Wisconsin Online, via ZOOM.   RSVP now! Deploying clean energy technology on multifamily buildings (apartments, condos, coops) can be more complex than other buildings.  Currently, Wisconsin's rules governing electric metering of Wisconsin residential buildings, (PSC 113.0803), urge individual units to have their own electric meters.  Electric metering can impact installation costs and ongoing energy costs for buildings with solar, heat pumps and other clean energy technology. We invite you to watch this short video  of the award-winning '1300 Residences' clean energy housing development in River Falls, Wisconsin.  The project shows how tailored building metering can make a building more efficient and deliver clean energy savings to Wisconsinites! contact@350wisconsin.org   10/10 @ 6:00pm-7:30pm:   Webinar "From Truman to Biden: US Policy toward the Ongoing Palestinian Nakba"  with Josh Reubner, Policy Director, IMEU Policy Project.
