SPOTLIGHT on Veterans for Peace
The annual Veterans For Peace National Convention will be held August 25-27. For the third year in a row, it will be held online due to continuing concerns about Covid-19. VFP’s online conventions have been terrific, and accessible to even more VFP members, friends, and allies. This convention promises to be particularly outstanding and will include keynote addresses from Irish Member of the European Parliament, Clare Daly, international economist Jeffrey Sachs, and nonviolence activist Kathy Kelly. There will also be excellent panel presentations on a variety of urgent situations facing the world today. Find more information on the Convention schedule and how you can participate here.

The Golden Rule, a historic ship sailing for a Nuclear-Free World, will visit Milwaukee Sept 1st.
Join us at Lakeshore State Park – 500 N. Harbor Drive – Milwaukee, WI make plans over the Labor Day weekend to visit the Golden Rule. The Golden Rule, a storied sailboat that helped bring about an end to atmospheric testing of nuclear weapons, will visit Milwaukee September 1st – 4th, 2023 as part of a 15-month, 11,000-mile voyage to inform and educate the public about the dangers of nuclear weapons proliferation.
The boat will be docked at Lakeshore State Park, on the downtown lakefront between Discovery World and Milwaukee World Festival grounds. It will be open to the public for visits and tours.
Public events will be held, and speakers/crew members will be available for presentations at schools, churches, or other venues. Contact Milwaukee Veterans For Peace to arrange a visit or presentation, including a video about the boat and its history.
By the time it reaches Milwaukee, Golden Rule will have been sailing for nearly a year on the Great Loop. It started in Minnesota, on the mighty Mississippi, on its way to the Gulf, the Atlantic Seaboard, and eventually the Great Lakes. It has been warmly welcomed all along the route, with mayoral proclamations, music and thanks from grateful Marshall Islanders, and scores of public events to spread the word about the danger nuclear weapons proliferation poses to our planet.
Don’t miss the opportunity to visit the boat, meet the crew, and learn about how to get involved.

***************************** Upcoming Events this week for WNPJ groups:
MADISON Mon Aug 7th, 6 - 8 pm * 350 Wisconsin’s Summer Picnic. At Brittingham Park, 829 W. Washington Ave. It’s a great time to meet 350 folks, new and old. Invite a friend who is interested in climate activism to come eat with us. It’s a potluck, so please bring a dish or beverage to share. We don’t want to buy paper plates, so please bring your own plate, silverware, and cup. The drinking fountains and bathrooms at the park will be operational. Please keep any beverages non-alcoholic to fit with park regulations. With the great playground nearby, it’s a family-friendly event — all are welcome. The park is right off the Capital City Trail, so consider riding your bicycle. The lakefront can have a cool breeze – which sounds lovely given all the hot weather we have been having. But if it’s cool out, you may want to bring an extra layer of clothing. The picnic replaces our monthly meeting for August. Regular monthly meetings with a zoom link resume in September (on September 11, a week late due to the Labor Day holiday). Contact: Julia Isaacs 350Wisconsin@350wisconsin.org

SINSINAWA Sat Aug 12th, 9:30 am - 4 pm Retreat: “Hagia Sophia”: Thomas Merton’s Magnificent Poem of Contemplation in Action. Sinsinawa Mound Center, County Road Z. Paula Hirschboeck will be leading this retreat. The renowned monk and mystic, Thomas Merton, helps us deepen into the life of Sophia. In his prose-poem “Hagia Sophia” he offers us the beauty of words to reveal the wisdom beyond words, Sophia. In this day-long retreat, Paula Hirschboeck will guide us in exploring and practicing each phase of Merton’s experience of Sophia. He invites us into four phases of contemplative practice: initial awakening, surrender, dark unknowing and entering the world as Sophia, the mercy of God in us. Presentation, conversation, and mindful activities honoring silence will support our day together. Registration ends on August 10, and the fee is $60 per person. Contact Arrangements at 608-748-4411 or visit our website at https://sinsinawa.org/moundcenter for more information.
