Take Up Your Cross: Stand Against Government Cruelty

Why the Cross?

On August 2, 2025, concerned Christians and others of goodwill will walk in

silence up State Street to the Capitol, carrying an eight-foot wooden cross. Our collective witness holds the cross as a symbol of resistance, courage, and

compassion. Jesus courageously took up his cross to resist the Empire’s cruel and oppressive policies toward the vulnerable in Roman society.  So, too, we take up our cross, as he called us to do, to resist our government’s cruel and violent policies toward the vulnerable.

We recognize that the practice of compassion is central to the beliefs and teaching of many other communities of faith and conscience and that these communities share our sense of calling to resist violence and cruelty. We welcome these communities and their members to participate in -- or support in other ways – this act of resistance, lifting up their own religious symbols.

We RESIST:

 Policies that harm immigrants, the poor, and the vulnerable

 War, militarism, and the use of violence

 Environmental destruction

 Christian Nationalism and authoritarianism

We AFFIRM:

 Truth, democracy, human dignity, world peace, and care for the earth

 Standing with the marginalized

 The way of justice, peace, and care for one another

Walk with us! 11am Saturday, August 2nd at State and Lake Street to the Capitol. Organizers emphasize the event is nonviolent and invite all people of faith or goodwill who are concerned about the present direction of our country to join in solidarity in this action.

For further information about this symbolic action, contact one of the following:

Rev. Sally Bowers – (608) 576-6320Rev. David Couper – (608) 444-7207Dr. Roberta Felker – (608) 220-8452Rev. Jerry Folk – (608) 513-3178Rev. Paul Knitter – (646) 648-1308

PSR Wisconsin and World Beyond War Madison asks those with fighter jets to refrain from conducting military flyovers on Hiroshima Day August 6, 2025 in Madison.

Dear Wisconsin Department of Military Affairs

Physicians for Social Responsibility Wisconsin (PSR WI) and World Beyond War Madison are writing to respectfully request that the Wisconsin National Guard refrain from conducting any military flyovers over the city of Madison on August 6, 2025.

This date marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, a somber moment in world history and a day of remembrance for the countless lives lost and forever changed by nuclear warfare. PSR Wisconsin will be holding its annual Lanterns for Peace event that evening at Tenney Park, where members of the community will gather to honor the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and to reaffirm our commitment to peace and nuclear disarmament.

Notably, in 2019 the City of Madison issued a proclamation recognizing August 6 as Hiroshima Day and August 9 as Nagasaki Day, and called on the United States to uphold its commitments under the 1970 Non-Proliferation Treaty. This proclamation reflects Madison’s commitment to peace, nuclear disarmament, and social justice.

We recognize and appreciate the service and dedication of the men and women of the Wisconsin National Guard. This request is not made in protest of their service, but in recognition of the solemnity of the day and the trauma that military aircraft can symbolize, particularly on an occasion dedicated to remembering the human cost of war and advocating for a more peaceful future.

A quiet sky over Madison on August 6 would be a meaningful gesture of respect for the victims of nuclear warfare and an acknowledgment of our community’s efforts to reflect, educate, and honor peace.

Thank you for your consideration of this request. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to discuss this further.

Sincerely,

Marta Karlov

Music by Tony Castañeda - Program at 6:30 - Free Hors d'oeuvres.Every day we hear news about this administration disappearing people they call criminals and terrorists. But the majority of them are hard working folks just living and supporting their families; they are an integral part of our shared economy, our culture, our progress. This use of violence mirrors what happens internationally in places like Gaza and allows the militarization of our communities. None of us should be surprised about the expansion of these tactics to ever more sections of our population. Why support Madison's Community Immigration Law Center (CILC)? Dane County/Madison was one of the first communities to join the SAFE Communities Network through the lawyers at CILC. CILC has successfully represented hundreds of people in immigration courts. Fifty-six percent of detained clients were released from detention and 64% of cases have achieved a successful outcome in court. This is compared to the 3% national success rate for unrepresented detained people. It costs $5,000 to represent one family in Immigration Court.
