Good Trouble events statewide - July 17

    In Madison:

Thurs. July 17th 12:00 Noon – 4:00 pm WI State Capitol Good Trouble Lives On Rally! Good Trouble Lives On is a national day of nonviolent action to respond to the attacks posed on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration and to remind them that in America, the power lies with the people. On July 17, the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’s passing, we’re taking action across the country to defend our democracy and carry forward his legacy of Good Trouble. From voter suppression bills like the SAVE Act to the criminalization of protest, the Trump administration is launching a full-scale attack on our civil and human rights. But we know the truth: in America, the power lies with the people, and we’re rising to prove it. https://www.mobilize.us/lightfordemocracy/event/804586/

In Milwaukee:

Thursday, July 17, 5 – 7pm (NEW TIME and PLACE!) ON LINCOLN MEMORIAL DRIVE ACROSS FROM COLECTIVO COFFEE.

Use this link to sign up: https://mobilize.us/s/KR1rse About this event Good Trouble Lives On is a national day of nonviolent action to respond to the attacks posed on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration and to remind them that in America, the power lies with the people. This is more than a protest; it’s a moral reckoning. A continuation of the movement Lewis helped lead, and a new front in the struggle for freedom. Please note: A core principle behind our Good Trouble Lives On actions is a commitment to nonviolence in all we do. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.

Thurs July 17, 6 – 7 pm  Webinar: Sanctuary and Sacred Resistance in Uncertain Times with Dr Sergio Gonzalez, Assistant Professor of History at Marquette University. A historian of twentieth-century U.S. migration, labor, and religion, his scholarship focuses on the development of Latino communities in the U.S. Midwest. He is the author of Mexicans in Wisconsin (Wisconsin Historical Society Press, 2017) and the co-editor of Faith and Power: Latino Religious Politics Since 1945 (New York University Press, 2022) with Felipe Hinojosa and Maggie Elmore. His most recently published book, Strangers No Longer: Latino Belonging and Faith in Twentieth-Century Wisconsin (University of Illinois Press, 2024), explores the relationship between Latino communities, religion, and social movements in the twentieth century Midwest. González’s current research expands on these themes through two new projects. The first examines the history of sanctuary movements in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, exploring the pivotal role religious institutions and people of faith have played in developing contemporary social movements for immigrant and refugee justice. His second project analyzes the central role the Midwest has come to play in the country’s fraught immigration politics, studying the century-long record of anti-immigrant sentiment in the region and the social movements that have risen to combat it. Register here.

Fri July 18, 10:30 – 11:30 am Webinar: Makak Aabajitoon Ganawendang Manoomin: Guiding wild rice conservation with Anishinaabe worldview. Wisconsin Wetlands Association is hosting this “Coffee Break” Webinar presented by Brandon Byrne, Great Lakes Indian Fish & Wildlife Commission, and Blaine Rothrock, Northwestern University. Manoomin (wild rice) occurs throughout the western Great Lakes basin. It played a central role in the Anishinaabe migration story and has long been sacred in sustaining the Anishinaabe lifeway. Abundance of manoomin has declined in recent decades on lakes once supporting major beds in Wisconsin. Manoomin has garnered significant research interest in recent years due to its importance to the identity of Ojibwe and other Indigenous peoples inhabiting the Great Lakes region. Historically, research efforts excluded Traditional Ecological Knowledge; however, with clear alignment of goals, collaborative research can complement tribal interests, strengthen partnerships, and lead to higher impact. Using a co-design approach, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology and Northwestern University collaborated with Ojibwe nations and the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission to develop a low-cost remote sensor to monitor environmental factors affecting manoomin. Register here. Sent to WNPJ by Clean Water Action Council contact@cleanwateractioncouncil.org
