WISDOM seeks Public Input - at on-line hearings and via e-mail
There hasn’t been an opportunity like this for public input on DOC’s Community Corrections program in a long time. We must not let this opportunity go by without speaking up!
The Department of Corrections has announced a 1-hour online public hearing on July 8 at 10:00 a.m. on a set of rules that are intended to implement the 12-year-old Short-term Sanctions Act (2013 Act 196) requiring the DOC to set up a system of immediate short-term sanctions for the most common supervision rule violations in order to reduce revocations. The law has huge potential for reducing conviction-less (crimeless) revocations and the overall prison population. The hearing will be followed by a period for submitting written comments until August 8. A copy of the Notice can be found here with a link to the zoom call-- Notice of Public hearing and Comment Period.
We need a BIG response from members of the WISDOM community and our allies to tell the DOC that these rules are an inadequate response to the requirements of the law. DOC told us they will implement these rules through new and revised supervision policies, but the failure to redefine “short-term sanctions” or even mention having a “system of short-term sanctions” undermines hope that there will be meaningful changes.
A longer background paper with more details, a copy of the law, and some suggestions for the kinds of comments and recommendations you might make, can be found here: Background Information.

Save the date: Thursday, July 17th-
Across America, Let’s Make Good Trouble!Ready to hit the streets again? Be a part of the next mass mobilization on July 17 with Good Trouble Lives On. We are facing the most brazen rollback of civil rights in generations. Whether you’re outraged by attacks on voting rights, the gutting of essential services, disappearances of our neighbors, or the assault on free speech and our right to protest, this day is for you. Good Trouble Lives On is a national day of nonviolent action to respond to the attacks posed on our civil and human rights by the Trump administration. On July 17, the anniversary of Congressman John Lewis’ passing, we’re taking action across the country to defend our democracy and carry forward his legacy. As Congressman Lewis declared, “Get in good trouble, necessary trouble, and help redeem the soul of America.” Event sent to WNPJ by Madison Infoshop peckjohne@gmail.com . Join 350 WI to discuss what we need to think about and understand to face the current administration’s executive orders and policies. In addition to the normal activities such as contacting legislators, letters to the editor, street theatre and protests, what else is possible? We will hear from two lawyers involved with the National Lawyers Guild who are currently based in Wisconsin. ONLINE VIA ZOOM: Register in advance for the meeting here. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting via computer, tablet, or smartphone.

Originally from Nebraska, she previously worked in a law collective and private practice in Madison and at a legal aid firm based in Wausau.
Lemuel Anderson’s identity, and fight is rooted in his people’s struggle and solidarity with the working class and solidarity with people who fight for human rights, and the rights of all beings. The concept of seven generations from Turtle Island informs his scholarship, his life, his work, and his love, and joy about life both now and after. His traditions, both from the black, and European parts of his heritage, acknowledge and respect the seven generations concept, which is why he is an environmentalist. He is the co-chair of the Dane County Green Party, and fights authoritarianism from this concept.
