WNPJ's 2024 Spring Assembly with a focus on Environmental Justice!

Updated: May 22

On May 18th, the Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice gathered from all corners of the state for our Spring 2024 Assembly focused on the theme "Environmental Justice - Confronting Extreme Extraction and Ending Resource Wars on Indigenous and Frontline People".

Dena Eakles gave an introduction and talked about the work of WNPJ's recently created Environmental Justice Task Force, providing important grounding for the featured speakers.

Elizabeth Bjork, with the Milwaukee Anti War Committee, then discussed militarism, environmental degradation, and the connection to Wisconsin.

Britnie Remer, organizer with 350 Wisconsin, talked about the Line 5 pipeline in northern Wisconsin, the threats it poses, and the battle that the Bad River Band has been fighting for over a decade to remove the pipeline from their reservation.

Finally, Lee Sandok Baker (LWV-Douglas County), Christina Kintop (LWV-Douglas County), and Lynn Wohwend (Neighbors Against NTEC) explained how they have organized around the proposed $1B Nemadji Trail Energy Center (NTEC) gas plant in Superior, WI.

The purpose of this annual spring meeting is to offer a program to set our WNPJ goals and vision for the year ahead, with input from our member groups and allies."Reports from the Field" allowed member groups to update us on their activities.
