Sustainable Saturday Night - Building Unity for a Just Budget

Saturday, February 27th - 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM

During this critical time, more groups and individuals than ever are demanding that Wisconsin's state budget finally become a moral document that is fair to Wisconsinites, both as residents and as taxpayers. Will we continue down the path toward increasing racial and economic inequities, or will we reverse direction towards justice for all?

This Saturday leaders from a wide range of grassroots groups, will give voice to what justice demands. This nonpartisan event will be among the first of many more to come until the budget passes.

Questions like the following will be addressed by the community leaders:

  • Would it be moral to refuse federal Medicaid dollars for health coverage of 90,900 more people in poverty especially when the federal dollars will also replace $634 million in state taxes?

  • Is it just to renege on the state’s promise to cover 2/3rds of public school costs causing cuts in staff, higher property taxes and more inequities statewide?

Other topics like state aid to municipalities, income tax loopholes, 17-year-olds in the adult correctional system, and the I-94 expansion in Milwaukee will also be discussed.

The Honorable Judge Everett Mitchell, Pastor of Christ the Solid Rock Baptist Church, will facilitate the conversation of the following eight leaders for justice in Wisconsin’s state budget:

Rabbi Bonnie Margulis, Executive Director of WI Faith Voices for Justice

Dr. Peter Bakken, Justice and Witness Coordinator of WI Council of Churches

Min. Wendell Harris, President of NAACP WI State Conference of Branches

Jon Peacock, Director of WI Budget Project, Research Director of Kids Forward

Justice Peche, Oneida Nation Member and Youth Climate Action Team Leader

Dr. Robert Kraig, Executive Director of Citizen Action of Wisconsin

Mike McCabe, Executive Director of Our Wisconsin Revolution

Elizabeth Ward, Director, Wisconsin Chapter of the Sierra Club

After our panelists share their perspectives, participants will have the opportunity to break into small groups to explore ways that we can assist in moving toward a just budget.
