First to Ratify

Event Dates:
First to Ratify
Sunday, June 23, 2019 at 12 PM – 2 PM
Capitol Square
Madison, Wisconsin
Please join LWV Wisconsin and LWV Dane County as we mark the 100th anniversary of Wisconsin’s ratification of the 19th Amendment. Wisconsin led by example on June 10, 1919, when the state legislature voted to approve the 19th Amendment and delivered its ratification papers to Washington ahead of all other states.
Gather with us at noon on Sunday, June 23rd, at the Forward statue on the Capitol Square (State Street corner), for a short program highlighting the importance of Wisconsin’s first-to-ratify vote, how it gave hope to many women but not to all, before marching with us in song around Capitol Square. League members will be on hand to assist the public with voter registration. The Raging Grannies will be there to lead us in spirited songs. Families and friends can make a suffrage sash, enjoy free frozen vanilla custard, and view the Wisconsin Historical Society exhibit, The Woman’s Hour Has Struck, Wisconsin: The First State to Ratify the 19th Amendment, now on display in the Capitol Rotunda.
Then head over for Forward Theater's performance on suffrage narratives. TWO STEPS FORWARD MONOLOGUE FESTIVAL at Promenade Hall in Overture Center at 2pm.
Join in the rallying cry, Forward! Wisconsin -  FIRST TO RATIFY - 19th Amendment, in remembrance of the day Wisconsin promptly acted to grant national suffrage to women.
