Annual Martin Luther King Jr Celebration - Spring Green

Event Dates:

Leader against sexual oppression to speak at MLK event January 26 in Spring Green

SPRING GREEN—Nestic Morris, 34-year-old outreach coordinator for the Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault (WCASA), will be guest speaker at the annual River Valley observance of Martin Luther King Day beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2019, in the library at Spring Green Elementary School, 830 W. Daley Street.

Ms. Morris is an activist in assisting voices from communities of color to be heard regarding sexual assault. She leads statewide training focused on the intersections of oppression in Black women’s lives. As co-director of the Wisconsin Women of Color Consortium, Morris strives to support women of color advocates in the sexual assault movement.

Nestic Morris grew up on Madison’s South Side, graduated from West High School and UW-Whitewater, and hails from a family whose roots in Madison date back three generations. A skilled public speaker, group facilitator and trainer, Morris said, as a community, “We have to have uncomfortable conversations and put tangible actions behind those words. Otherwise we are just community ‘talkers’ and not ‘doers’.”

The annual observance of Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday in Spring Green is organized by an ad hoc group of River Valley residents. Coffee and birthday cake will be served. Free will donations are welcomed to help pay for event expenses. For more information contact David Giffey, 608-753-2199.
