Igor Deserved Chance At Rehabilitation

I was shocked to learn of Judge Juan Colas's decision to have Igor, the bull mastiff who mauled a smaller dog in a Middleton dog park last summer, put to death.

Anyone following this case knows that Igor endured an irresponsible, improper upbringing. The blame for Igor's behavior rests on his owner's shoulders. Igor deserved an opportunity for rehabilitation.

The Alliance for Animals put together just such an opportunity. We found an established no-kill sanctuary in northern Wisconsin that agreed to care for him, as well as a donor to pay his transportation costs. The sanctuary offered to care for Igor for only $150 per year. This information was conveyed to both attorneys as well as the judge.

While I understand the court's concern after Igor nipped at a caregiver at the Dane County Humane Society, consider the context. While at DCHS, Igor was no doubt treated in a professional manner, however he was held in solitary confinement for nearly three months.

Allowing Igor to go to a sanctuary is the least the courts should have done for him. With a secure place to reside, Igor would have had the chance he deserved all along. I hope that next time the court will choose to side with the innocent victim.
