Wisconsin Peace Events Marking the Second Anniversary of the Iraq War

The second anniversary of the beginning of the war on Iraq will be on March 19-20. Groups across the U.S. are planning events for that weekend; many are listed on United for Peace and Justice's website at www.unitedforpeace.org In the last 2 years, we know how hard the peace and justice groups in Wisconsin have been working to oppose the war and to bring our troops home. Some of our WNPJ member organizations are planning vigils and actions for March 19-20. WNPJ wants to support these actions and will be posting them on our website for networking purposes. We will also issue a press release in early March to focus attention on the amount of anti-war activism that is happening all around our state.

Kathy Kelly endorses Iraq Moratorium

Kathy Kelly: Why I endorse the Iraq Moratorium
"The risks we may take now, to stop the war, -- and for many of us we'll be risking convenience and an interruption of comfortable routines, - are far less than the risk next generations will pay if we are negligent. U.S. wealth and productivity spent on war diverts resorces acutely needed to resolve problems our planet faces because of our reckless consumption, waste and pollution. I hope the Moratorium helps all of us slow down, think about where we're going, and find, together, ways to put an end to war." Read more...

5/16/08: UFPJ report on war funding

Sue Udry, Legislative Coordinator for United for Peace and Justice, reports on the status of war funding votes in the Senate and House:

Friday, May 16

Yesterday, when the House voted against additional funding for the war and occupation of Iraq, they handed us an opportunity. Over the next several days we need to make the most of this opportunity, and our efforts will have an impact on the debate and vote when this goes to the Senate.  But we have to act fast: the Senate could vote as soon as Tuesday, May 20.  We encourage your group(s) to do what you can to pressure your Senators to vote NO on any funding that will continue the war and occupation:
