Posters At Capitol Sound Alarm On Nukes

Dear Editor: What a wonderful feeling to open Saturday's Capital Times and read the headline, "Surge in spending on nukes a grave error," and Frida Berrigan's story.
Some of us on the Hiroshima-Nagasaki Exhibition Committee are older Americans who remember the duck-and cover drills of the 1950s, bomb shelters in suburban homes, and fear of the unknown. We hoped that was all safely behind us with the 1970 signing of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, only to learn that the U.S. Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration is asking for $150 billion to develop a new generation of nuclear weapons.
We were offered the opportunity to display 20 posters, a gift from the Hiroshima Peace Cultural Foundation, as an effort to raise public awareness about nuclear weapons. The posters will be on display through Friday in the rotunda of the State Capitol from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. They can also be viewed on Saturday at the public hearing on nuclear weapons issues at 10 a.m. in the Capitol.
