3/2 Sun 3 pm "The War in Iraq:
Historical Background to the Present Conflict." - Dodgeville. Plymouth Congregational (UCC) Church. On the
eve of the 6th year of war in Iraq,
many Americans still fail to understand the country and the sources of the
present conflict. The media have moved the war to a back-page and treat daily
casualties with as much alarm as weather advisories. After nearly five years in Iraq with thousands of American men and women killed
and more wounded for life, tens of thousands of innocent children without
parents, hundreds of thousands of civilian Iraqis dead, uprooted and impoverished,
and 1.286 trillion dollars squandered, it is time to give Iraq another
look. This important presentation by Dr. Nancy Turner and sponsored by Grassroots Citizens of Wisconsin and Grassroots Citizens for Peace will cover: the founding of the country of Iraq by the Brits and the French after
WWI, Iraq's history in the decades leading up to Iraq's war with Iran in the 1980s,
details of U.S. support of Saddam in the 1980s, the background to the 1st and
2nd Gulf Wars, some info about Saddam Hussein's life and behavior, the plight
of the Kurds, the current situation in Iraq and the various factions and forces
at work upon its government today, and some possible outcomes of this war. A Question/Answer session will complete the presentation
The event is open to the public and is free-of-charge. Refreshments will follow. Contact: jhammatt@mhtc.edu
