Students demand an end to Sheriff's harassment of immigrants

More than a hundred University of Wisconsin students and community members marched to a Dane County Board meeting to demand that Dane County Sheriff Dave Mahoney end his practice of reporting all undocumented persons arrested to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. A non-discrimination policy adopted by the Dane County Board prohibits law enforcement officers from inquir9ing into the immigration status of those who are arrested, but Sheriff Mahoney insists he has the right to continue the practice. “It causes a lot of immigrants to stop reporting things to the city for fear of being deported,” said Samir Jaber, a student member of Progressive Dane, said. “We feel we have a moral obligation to stand by our immigrant community” Read more...
