Once-respectable Gop Hijacked By Extremists

Dear Editor: The Sunday editorial about Lee Dreyfus indicates how parties and politics can change.

The Republican Party of Dreyfus has been hijacked slowly but surely by extreme right-wing politicians who do not believe in the common good but rather in corporate power to the point where corporations now control our state and national legislative bodies.

Their power even reaches into our media and churches.

Fox Network, a pro-Bush, pro-Republican propaganda source, suppresses news and fights against anyone opposing the radical Republican viewpoint, which is anti-democracy-oriented.

Churches, such as the Catholic Church, try valiantly to keep the message of Jesus alive but are bullied into keeping their messages hidden away on the Internet and never dare speak about their anti-torture and anti-Iraq war stances in the pulpit or in their newspapers. What would happen if Christians and Jews truly spoke out? I imagine the Republicans would withdraw their pledges of money to churches and synagogues.

Some evangelical churches have been infiltrated by radicals who have distorted the Christian message so now it's OK, according to them, to wage war, torture prisoners, break laws, and cut off assistance to the poor. All these things are clearly anti-Christian, but God-fearing people in America seem afraid to speak up. Perhaps because they would be labeled "terrorists."

The once great old party of Lincoln will now destroy our country unless real Republicans stand up and reclaim its ideals and values.
