Local efforts to get an impeachment referendum on the February primary ballot died last night as no supervisor on the Dane County Board came forward to introduce the measure requested by the Wisconsin Impeachment Coalition.

Coalition spokesman Buzz Davis was disappointed that no advisory referendum calling for impeaching President Bush and Vice President Cheney will appear on the spring ballot.

"If the question was on the ballot it would pass by a large majority in Madison because of the high percent of progressives," Davis said in a statement.

Davis said supervisors were approached to introduce the resolution but no one would do it.

"Some came close," Davis said. "A number are for it but none would come forward."

The County Board's inaction on a ballot initiative came two days after the Wisconsin Impeachment Coalition failed to generate any interest from alders on the Madison City Council to support putting a referendum on the spring primary ballot.

Resolutions were called for by the coalition now, so the measure would have been approved and language for a referendum sent to the county clerk by Jan. 9 to get on ballots for the Feb. 19 primary.

County Board Supervisor Dennis O'Loughlin said there was no interest among supervisors in introducing an impeachment resolution because it didn't make any sense to do so this late into the president's second term of office.

"By the time you would have the investigation, we'll be out of the term," O'Loughlin said. "Instead of having Congress work on this, let's see if they can do something productive in the remaining days of this term."
