Jean and Charles Sweet Madison

Dear Editor: We have been residents of the west neighborhood Midvale Heights since 1953. Charlie, 84, is a veteran of World War II, participating in the Battle of Okinawa. His experience in the Army there convinced him that war is not the answer, and now he is a member of Veterans for Peace.

Both of us have been active in neighborhood projects with Jean, 82, serving on the Midvale Heights Board. Beginning during the Vietnam War we both became activists to end the war and we continue as activists against each war until now.

We have been proud to live in Madison, a city with a reputation for doing the right thing - often led by the City Council and the mayor. The failure of the impeachment resolution in Madison has not gone unnoticed in our nation. How can a city named after James Madison, a Founder of our country who is called "the Father of the Constitution," fail to protect the U.S. Constitution, which is being shredded? A reminder to each council member and the mayor that they took an oath of office to defend and protect the U.S. Constitution.

As citizens they are our first line and power of government that we can turn to. We would have liked to have a reasonable and enlightened discussion on impeachment with all of them because this action is so important.

Respectfully we are asking Ald. Mark Clear to reintroduce the failed resolution at the 6:30 meeting Tuesday and vote yes. We also request that alders who abstained join Clear and the other yes voters and pass this resolution.

Also, Mayor Cieslewicz, we ask you to take leadership in passing this resolution.

Impeachment of this administration would end the war.
