A group led by former Green Party congressional candidate Mike Miles plans to meet at U.S. Rep. Dave Obey's Wausau office Monday to urge Obey to more vigorously oppose the war in Iraq.
Paul Gilk of Merrill, an anti-war activist, said although Obey is openly critical of the Bush administration's policies, "his rhetoric often doesn't reflect the way he votes."
Obey's press secretary, Ellis Brachman, disputes that notion. "He voted against the war in the first place, and the congressman is working every day to do what he can to end this war," Brachman said Friday.
Gilk said he and Miles hope for a large turnout Monday at 1:45 p.m. at Obey's office in the U.S. Bank building at Fifth and Jefferson streets in Wausau.
Obey will not be in Wausau on Monday, and Brachman said the congressman will be represented by his district director, Doug Hill. Brachman considers it a "meeting" and characterized Gilk's notifying the media about it as a "publicity stunt."
Many people have asked for meetings to express their disapproval of the war, Brachman said, and he expects that to continue.
Miles came in third in the November race for the 7th Congressional District. Obey, a Democrat who is serving his 20th term in Congress, won decisively, and Republican Nick Reid placed second.
