Thank Milwaukee Area Tech College for "Boycott Arizona" vote

By a vote of 6-1, the Board of Milwaukee Area Technical College voted to join the growing "Boycott Arizona" movement and ban any purchase by the college of goods and services from Arizona-based businesses. The vote came in response to Arizona's enactment of SB1070, a harsh anti-immigrant bill that requires police to stop and question any person, if they have a "reasonable suspicion" that the person lacks proper immigration documents. "The Arizona statute I think is a repulsive example of xenophobic fear which is inconsistent with MATC's obligation to provide an educational environment that is respectful of the diverse constituency we serve," said Board member Peter Earle, who drafted the resolution. MATC board chairwoman Lauren Baker said, "For us, a vote to boycott Arizona, it's a vote to ensure the security of our students, to stand by the mission of our college. We have long been a college that immigrants come to to learn a language. We're quite capable of shifting business to other companies in other states." Read more...
