The Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort (WAVE) a WNPJ member group working to end firearms violence, is delivering 6,000 postcards, signed by citizens in every state legislative district, to members of the legislature.WAVE collected the postcards from all across Wisconsin to demonstrate the depth and breadth of grassroots support for legislation requiring background checks on all gun sales. WAVE's news advisory:
When: Wednesday, Feb. 17, 2010, 10am to 4pm
Where: State Capitol, Madison, Wisconsin
Who: Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort (WAVE) Educational Fund
What: WAVE Educational Fund will deliver postcards to all members of the state legislature.
Legislators will also receive a list of more that 80 organizations that support conducting a criminal background check prior to all gun sales.
"We were not surprised by the support we found in all areas of Wisconsin," said Jeri Bonavia, Executive Director of WAVE Educational Fund. "Polling has shown that 84% of likely voters, including seven out of 10 of Wisconsin's NRA members, believe that anyone buying a gun should have a background check. Wisconsin residents are saying loud and clear to members of the state legislature that it is time to pass commonsense legislation that will close the enormous loophole that has for too long allowed violent criminals easy, unfettered access to guns."
