Dear Editor: Now we can all understand why President Bush is failingin taking democracy to Iraq, and succeeding in destroying our democracy in theUnited States.
He uses the word democracy a lot, but obviously Bush doesn't know what itmeans. Sometimes it seems that he means capitalism. Sometimes he seems to meanagreeing with him or with the U.S.Now he has confessed: Bush thinks he is the decider. The essentialdifference between a democracy and a dictatorship, or a kingdom, is this: In akingdom or a dictatorship, the top man is the decider. In a democracy, thepeople are the deciders.
Because of the citizens' crucial role as deciders, it is essential that thepeople be well informed and not lied to or misled and that the elections areconducted and counted honestly.
It is obvious that this administration has failed to meet these conditions.
It is equally important that the citizens seek out the truth, so they canmake wise decisions in selecting and advising their elected officials, andthat they participate fully in the electoral process.
What we do will determine who is the decider and whether our democracy willsurvive.
