A major Wisconsin National Guard mission in Iraq ended today with the transfer of the last detainees from Camp Bucca near the Kuwait border.

State guard soldiers from units based in Madison, Baraboo, Marinette, Janesville, Fond du Lac, Waupun and Ripon have been involved in guard duty or in transferring detainees to other facilities under an agreement with the Iraq government, Lt. Col. Tim Donovan, spokesman for the Wisconsin guard in Iraq, said in a press release.

Several Wisconsin units remain at the camp performing support and security duties. Others are now stationed at other detention facilities. Wisconsin's 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team has about 3,300 soldiers at a half-dozen bases in Iraq. Their year-long mobilization is to end in January.
