What's Happening in the Senate: The Senate Judiciary Committee is
reviewing an immigration bill (the Chairman's Mark) proposed by Senator
Arlen Specter. The bill currently contains provisions on mandatory and
indefinite detention, limitations on access to the courts, and
criminalization of undocumented immigrants. Basic rights to due
process, a fair trial, and freedom from arbitrary and indefinite
detention are threatened by these provisions.

Timeline:The Senate Judiciary Committee will continue reviewing the
Chairman's Mark on March 15th and 16th.If the Senate Judiciary
Committee has not yet agreed to a bill by March 27th, Senator Frist has
threatened to bring his own bill to the floor of the Senate. The Frist
bill will probably include many of the House passed Sensenbrenner-King
enforcement provisions that impact the right to due process and other
rights.
