2009/06/13: Democratic Party of Wisconsin supports "Bring the Guard Home! It's the Law." campaign

Delegates of the 2009 Democratic Party of Wisconsin Convention adopted a resolution in support of legislation that will place new checks on future orders to federalize Wisconsin's national guard.

The resolution (shown below), Supporting Assembly Bill 203 To Require The Governor To Examine Orders That Place Wisconsin National Guard On Federal Active Duty To Determine If They Are Lawful And Valid, was unanimously adopted June 13.

In addition, dozens of delegates visited the Bring The Guard Home table hosted by Dennis Coyier to get information, sign the petition, and take post cards to mail in to their local Assembly Representatives.

The next step will be to get the Wisconsin Democratic Party leadership to communicate news of the resolution's adoption to our elected leaders asking for their support of AB 203.

WHEREAS, Iraq was never a threat and yet Wisconsin’s national guard remains deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan;

WHEREAS, stronger measures are needed to ensure that Wisconsin’s national guard is not unlawfully federalized; and

WHEREAS, AB 203 will require the governor to examine future federalization orders and report to the appropriate standing committees;

THEREFORE, RESOLVED, the DPW urges Wisconsin legislators to endorse and support AB 203.

2809-JHD-07: END DEPLOYMENT OF THE WISCONSIN NATIONAL GUARD TO IRAQ (2ND CD - 98 WORDS)
WHEREAS, in 2002, Congress approved the Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) with a limited mission of defending the security of the US against Iraq;

WHEREAS, US forces, including members of the Wisconsin National Guard, have long ago fulfilled the AUMF, so there exists no lawful basis for continued deployment of Wisconsin National Guard units in Iraq; and,

WHEREAS, maintaining Wisconsin National Guard members in Iraq is causing significant harm to them, their families, their communities, and Wisconsin's economy;

THEREFORE, RESOLVED, the DPW demands the Wisconsin National Guard be withdrawn from Iraq and redeployed to Wisconsin.
