Blackwater conference to be held

STOCKTON-Saturday, April 25, the Clearwater Citizen's group, in conjunction with the Midwest Regional Catholic Workers Spring Retreat, will hold a conference on Blackwater and other private military companies. This conference will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Stockton, located at 219 North Pearl Street in Stockton.

The Unitarian Universalist is renting its space for this conference which does not imply endorsement.

Keynotes will be given by Jeremy Scahill, award winning journalist of the Nation Magazine and Democracy NOW!, author of the NY Times best-seller Blackwater: The Rise of the World's Most Powerful Mercenary Army. Also the morning keynote will be Kathy Kelly, co-founder and co-coordinator of Voices for Creative Non-Violence. She has just returned from a humanitarian trip to the Gaza. Ms. Kelly has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize three times.

Dian Wilson, co-founder of Codepink and the Texas Jail Project.org, along with Col. Ann Wright who is one of the three U.S. State Department officials to publicly resign in direct protest of the March 2003 invasion of Iraq, will be announcing Eric Prince, owner and Blackwater as the 2009 "Black Planet award winner." The recognition comes from the German Ethics and Economics Foundation.

The workshops and open forum discussions will include shared experience from members of the Catholic Workers arrested in 2007 during the civil disobedience action at presentation from members of Stop Blackwater in California.

The Catholic Worker retreat will include nonviolence training on Sunday and planning for the action on Monday at the gate of Blackwater's Midwest training site on Skunk Hallow Road.
