(Threatened Dreams post by Jane H Kavaloski )

As I walk my grandson to elementary school each day, I observe the other families involved in this ritual of “accompaniment.” But it is not only accompaniment in the literal sense; but also, accompaniment in support of dreams and expectations.

We want the best for our children.  We want them to have teachers who care about the intellectual, emotional and physical growth of their students.   We want the schools to create an atmosphere that is supportive, safe, challenging and enjoyable.

The basing of the F-35s fighter jets at Truax Field in Madison is a threat to those dreams and expectations for children and families living on the north and east sides of Madison. The Air Force has stated that the F-35 will be four times louder than t"Threatened Dreams: he F-16 it may replace. In addition, the F-35 will increase air pollution.

*Risks to children and adults that can result from exposure to Loud Noise and increased Air Pollution:

  • preterm or low birth weights, delayed speech development and hearing loss
  • interference with concentration, long term memory, reading and
  • math comprehension
  • increased stress hormones that cause sleep disturbances, increased anxiety,
  • PTSD
  • asthma, cancer, heart disease and strokes

How many youth will be directly affected if the F-35s are based at Truax? There is no accurate count, but we can assume that it will be in the thousands.  Within three miles of Truax are 59 multi-grade educational programs, including accredited pre-school programs, elementary, middle and high schools, and Madison College.

The well-being of the children and families living on the north and east sides of Madison should be of concern to all of us! Why should their hopes and lives be compromised by a squadron of fighter jets that may be based near their diverse and thriving neighborhoods?  In addition, because noise and air pollution transcend boundaries, families living along the flight path of the F-35s throughout Wisconsin also will be affected.
