Spotlight on a WNPJ member group: Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA)

Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) is an organization that strives to promote clean energy, energy efficiency and sustainable living through education and demonstrations.

Established in 1990, MREA is a group that four primary areas of emphasis to advocate their goals. The first of these is their renewable energy training, which is a form of professional training for solar PV, solar thermal and smaller scale wind systems at a variety of levels. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this particular emphasis has been entirely online to ensure safety. The second area of emphasis is Rise Up Midwest, which is directed by MREA but comprised of different individuals, businesses, organizations, jurisdictions, and workforce development partners. Together, these different groups work to create support what MREA calls “Main Street”, an energy investment and grid modernization collective that works in response to the recession created by the COVID-19 pandemic. The third area of interest for the Midwest Renewable Energy Association is their working with their Solar on Schools program. The Solar on Schools is a program that provides a variety of resources at no cost for the kindergarten through 12th grade schools that are interested in starting a solar PV system. This organization also includes a grant, an on-demand course and technical assistance services.

There are several opportunities to get involved. The Midwest Renewable Energy Association is reliant upon a network of members, volunteers, participants, and donors to help join their mission. To stay in the loop, interested parties can also sign up for the MREA newsletter, which offers updates on the Energy fair and renewable energy news.

With MREA, there are also several volunteer opportunities and events that help cultivate involvement with sustainability year-round.

As for upcoming events, the Midwest Renewable Energy Association is hosting a Member Celebration this summer. Located in the rolling hills of Custer WI,  the MREA hosts an outdoor, socially distanced event to celebrate the MREA members and community each June - the MREA Fair!   If you are not a member, that is not a problem – the Midwest Renewable Energy Association has missed seeing everyone this year, and to say thank you for the ongoing support, the MREA will grant complimentary membership when a non-member ticket is purchased.

We hope to celebrate with you soon!
