Urge you members of Congress to support much-needed spending cuts to the Pentagon

It’s not unusual for a newly minted White House to present what’s known as a “skinny budget,” a wish list of spending requests for Congress and some basic economic projections. We're hearing that’s what to expect from President Biden’s first budget proposal in the coming weeks.

What’s important to remember though, is that it is Congress that sets government spending levels, and this year may be a crucial one in getting necessary cuts to the bloated Pentagon budget.

Act today: urge you members of Congress to support much-needed spending cuts to the Pentagon.

Last year, Pentagon spending reached $740,000,000,000 – three-quarters of a trillion dollars, up nearly 20% since the beginning of the Trump administration. All the while, the COVID pandemic and a record-breaking hurricane season in the gulf have laid bare the truth about what our true national security needs are, things upgraded nuclear weapons or a Space Force are utterly useless against.

Some of our strongest allies in Congress see a real opportunity this year though, as spending limits that forced Democrats and Republicans to link defense and domestic increases are set to expire.

Two of our strongest allies in the House, Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA) and Rep. Mark Pocan (D-WI) are taking advantage of this opportunity in organizing the Defense Spending Reduction Caucus, and it’s crucial for us to amplify their efforts from the grassroots.

Act today: urge you members of Congress to support much-needed spending cuts to the Pentagon.

In announcing the new caucus, Rep. Lee highlighted that “wasteful defense spending does not make our communities safer – it only weakens our ability to respond to crises, Black and Brown people continue to be the ones that suffer most. We can’t keep spending billions for weapons while leaving our people defenseless against COVID. The Defense Spending Reduction Caucus will support our efforts to redirect wasteful defense spending toward investing in human needs.”

Her colleague Rep. Pocan went on to assert that “from unnecessary new nuclear weapons to the Space Force to the ballooning use of outside contractors—our Pentagon spending is growing more rapidly than needed with abundant waste and endless wars. With this new caucus, we hope to lead Congress in decreasing and redirecting the defense budget.”

In addition to Representative’s Lee and Pocan in the House, Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) are organizing similar efforts in the Senate.

Act today: urge you members of Congress to support much-needed spending cuts to the Pentagon.

I’m not so naive as to think just because Democrats hold both chambers of Congress and the White House, we’ve got this in the bag. Plenty of Democrats take millions of dollars from the defense industry and their army of lobbyists, and they’ve voted year after year in support of outrageous Pentagon budgets.

It’s going to take a MASSIVE effort from the grassroots, and that effort starts today with your action. We have to take advantage of this unique situation. This is only the beginning, but your action today is critical in getting us off to the start we’ll need.

It’s time we demand what we want: world-class healthcare for all Americans, a real commitment to catastrophic climate change, food security, racial justice, quality education, and so much more.

Please act today: urge you members of Congress to support much-needed spending cuts to the Pentagon.

Thank you for taking action today!

P.S. If your members of Congress are already part of the Defense Spending Reduction Caucus, you’ll be directed to a message thanking them for their leadership. If they are not a member, the message will be to urge them to support efforts this year to cut the Pentagon budget.
