&nbsp\;

Daniel Maguire\, Professor of Ethics at Marquette University will examine this alliance in a presentation Monday 1 March 2010.&nbsp\; Entitled &quot\;The U.S. Israeli Partnership: An Ethical Critique\,&quot\; it will begin at 7:00 pm at Olympia Brown Unitarian Universalist Church\, 625 College Avenue\, Racine (College Avenue &amp\; 7th Street).&nbsp\; The event is free and open to the public.

&nbsp\;

He has received various awards and honors\, including being listed by Ms. Magazine as &quot\;one of the 40 male heroes of the past decade\, men who took chances and made a difference.&quot\;&nbsp\; He received a &quot\;best teacher&quot\; award when he was a Visiting Professor at Notre Dame University.

DESCRIPTION:
Economic Workshop
Or how the hell did we get into this mess?

Presented by Rockford Peace &amp\; Justice Action Committee and the Rockford Progressive Meetup

2pm\, Sunday\, March 7\, at JustGoods\, fair trade market\, 201 Seventh Street.

Bill Barclay of the Chicago Political Economy Group will lead us through some basic economic tasks to arrive at a better understanding of the American economy.

Developed and taught by CPEG&rsquo\;s Bill Barclay\, the Economic Crisis Workshop is designed to teach\, in understandable terms\, how the U.S.
arrived at our current economic crisis and to suggest some policies that we could adopt to reverse the economic downturn. It is a participatory workshop that has activities to enhance understanding and discussion. Participation is important\; you need about 2 hours to complete the full workshop.

The workshop describes three causes of the economic crisis: (1) long term growth in inequality\; (2) credit\, debt and financial deregulation\, and (3) the U.S. dollar and the World Economy. There are exercises and/or dialogues that are used in each case.

The program is free and open to the public. Call to register\, or for more info: Stanley Campbell 815-964-7111

&nbsp\; The Chicago Political Economy Group (CPEG) evolved from a Political Economy study group formed at Roosevelt University in Chicago\, Illinois more than 15 years ago. Members of CPEG include academics\, political activists and others who have a serious interest in progressive political economy.

you can go to www.cpegonline.org and see the workshop information (audience exercises\, dialogues\, etc).
DESCRIPTION:
3/9 Tues Hearing for the Guard Home-It's the Law! Campaign - statewide interest. In the State Capitol in Madison. Contact: Steve Burns at outreach@wnpj.org .

We will all have a chance today to stand up for the members of the Wisconsin Guard and the rule of law - can you stand with us? On March 9

\, the Wisconsin State Assembly's Committee on Veterans and Military Affairs will hold hearings on Assembly Bill 203\, the &quot\;Safeguard the Guard&quot\; bill\, which requires the Governor to conduct a legal review of any Federal request for overseas deployment of Wisconsin&rsquo\;s Guard and to refuse any deployment determined to be unlawful.

&nbsp\;

This is a critical moment &ndash\; and an incredible opportunity - for the &quot\;Safeguard the Guard&quot\; campaign. With only 13 days to go\, we need to be ready on March 9 with the most effective and compelling testimony possible\, and ensure that the hearing room is standing-room-only\, with people like you who want us to protect Wisconsin&rsquo\;s Guard from unlawful overseas deployments. (Why are Guard deployments to Iraq illegal?

Read the answer here...

&nbsp\;

We've already lined up an impressive roster of speakers\, including veterans\, military families\, and even Mike Fisher\, the Vermont state legislator who drafted the nation's first state-level legislation challenging federal deployment orders. Mike has succeeded in persuading a majority of the legislators in Vermont's lower house of the need for states to enact legal safeguards on Guard deployments\, and we're confident he will present a powerful case to the members of the Veterans and Military Affairs Committee.

Here's how you can help:

1. Attend the hearing:

Hundreds of new bills get introduced in the legislature every year\, and our ability to demonstrate public interest determines whether our bill survives or falls by the wayside. On March 9\, we will have the opportunity to put a display of public interest right in front of the ten legislators who will be deciding the fate of the &quot\;Safeguard the Guard&quot\; bill.

Your presence on March 9 shows you care about the members of the Guard\, respect the sacrifices they have made\, and want us to honor their commitment to our state with a commitment of our own: that they will never again be used in an illegal war.

2. Reach out to the constituents of a committee member:

Do you have friends in Rice Lake? A brother in Wisconsin Rapids? An antiwar uncle in Dodgeville? The members of the

Veterans and Military Affairs Committee

are listed below\, and we need &quot\;yes&quot\; votes from at least six members for the bill to make it out of committee and on to the floor of the Assembly. Can you help us get to six? A call or email to friends and family in these key districts can make a critical difference. You can direct your friends to the State Assembly's

page if they need to check which legislative district they reside in.

3. Nominate a speaker:

One of the most effective ways to make the case for protecting Wisconsin&rsquo\;s Guard from illegal deployments is to bring home to the Veteran&rsquo\;s Affairs committee the high cost our Guard members and communities have paid for the current unlawful deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan. Some voices we seek to include are:

&nbsp\;

&bull\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Members of the Guard and their family members\, along with social-service workers who have worked with Guard members and their families\, who can testify to the stresses placed on the Guard by repeated and lengthy overseas deployments.
&bull\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Employers and first-responders (like police and fire) who can testify to the stresses placed on our communities and economy when important members of the community are taken to fight in unlawful wars.

Do you know someone who can speak effectively on this issue? Please forward your nominations for speakers to Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice at (608) 250-9240\,

outreach@wnpj.org

.

4. Make a donation

:

&nbsp\;

We're optimistic about our chances with the Veterans and Military Affairs Committee\, but we also know that the effort to &quot\;democratize defense&quot\; and give citizens meaningful tools to restrain a federal government bent on endless war won't be won or lost with one vote in the Wisconsin state assembly. Wisconsin Network for Peace and Justice has been hard at work for twenty years\, and your donation helps make sure we'll be here for the long run\, working on &quot\;Safeguard the Guard&quot\; and many other issues you care about. Please

DESCRIPTION:
The Wisconsin Humanities Council &quot\;Making It Home&quot\; Film Festival comes to the Dodge Theater\, 205 N. Iowa Street in Dodgeville -- March 11 to 14. &nbsp\;Seven award-winning international films\, each taking a unique look at our earth home\, will be featured. &nbsp\;All tickets are free -- first come\, first serve. &nbsp\;Doors open one half hour before each film. &nbsp\;Grassroots and Sustain Iowa County are among the sponsors. &nbsp\;Between films on Saturday\, there will be environmentally friendly kids activities\, a local food tasting and other activities at the Dodgeville Library -- all free. &nbsp\;&nbsp\;(See details below).
&nbsp\;

THURS.\, MARCH 11\, 6:30 p.m.. &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&quot\;UPSTREAM BATTLE&quot\;
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&quot\;Upstream Battle&quot\; tells the &nbsp\;inspiring story of Northwest native Americans who fight to save their historic salmon fishing rights by working within the system -- with officials\, farmers and power company execs -- so that everyone learns how to compromise and win.
&nbsp\;
FRI\, MARCH 12 (double feature) 6 p.m.&quot\;GARBAGE DREAMS&quot\;
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&quot\;Garbage Dreams&quot\; profiles a bunch of slum kids in Cairo\, Egypt whose only source of income is recycling almost every scrap of the city's garbage and they support their families doing it -- until a big high cost\, high tech company tries to muscle them out. &nbsp\;
&nbsp\;
FRI.\, MARCH 12\, 8 p.m.. &nbsp\;&quot\;GREENING OF SOUTHIE&quot\;
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&quot\;Greening of Southie&quot\; is a humorous tale of the burly south Boston construction workers who built the area's first LEED certified building -- and the ironic hurdles they faced with a healthy dose of skepticism. &nbsp\;&nbsp\;(Maybe leave the kids at home. &nbsp\;The construction workers use &quot\;colorful&quot\; language.) &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;
&nbsp\;
SAT\, MARCH 13\, 1 p.m. &nbsp\;&quot\;AMERICA'S LOST LANDSCAPE&quot\;
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Akin to chopping down all of California's redwoods\, 240 million acres &nbsp\;of the Midwest's tall grass prairie were destroyed in a single generation -- but now diehard folks are restoring remnants. &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&quot\;America's Lost Landscape: &nbsp\;The Tall Grass Prairie&quot\;\, traces the &nbsp\;&nbsp\;history and its consequences. &nbsp\;Aldo Leopold's granddaughter will be in Dodgeville to introduce the film.
&nbsp\;
SAT.\, MARCH 13\, 4 p.m. &nbsp\;&quot\;WHAT'S ON YOUR PLATE?&quot\;
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;Perfect for the whole family\, &quot\;What's On Your Plate?&quot\; follows the rollicking trail of two NYC pre-teens as they sleuth out the source of all their food -- &nbsp\;and eventually decide they'd better take charge by learning how to eat local and healthy.
&nbsp\;
SAT.\, MARCH 13\, 7 p.m. &nbsp\;&quot\;GHOST BIRD&quot\;
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&quot\;Ghost Bird&quot\; traces the story of the Arkansas town that was turned upside down with the alleged sighting of an ivory-billed woodpecker and the millions of dollars diverted to the futile search. &nbsp\;The film then steps back in history to discover how Teddy Roosevelt tried to save this magnificent bird from extinction -- when there was still time.
&nbsp\;
SUN.\, MARCH 14\, 1 p.m. &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&quot\;FINDING FARLEY&quot\;
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&quot\;Finding Farley&quot\; recounts the adventures and misadventures of a young couple who spent five months in a canoe paddling across Canada with their two-year-old child and a dog -- following in the path of noted Canadian author Farley Mowat and discovering spectacular scenery and truths along the way.
&nbsp\;
SUN. MARCH 14\, 3 p.m. &nbsp\;&nbsp\;&quot\;YES MEN FIX THE WORLD&quot\;
&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&quot\;Yes Men Fix the World&quot\; is a hilarious tale of a pair of professional rabble rousers who use razor-edge satire to expose corporate hypocrisy and power abuse around the globe that lock us into unsustainable lifestyles without our consent. &nbsp\;&nbsp\;Dow Chemical's Bhopal disaster and Exxon-Mobil's clean up efforts after Hurricane Katrina are in their sights. &nbsp\;(Some suggestive scenes make this film for adults only!)
&nbsp\;
BETWEEN FILMS ON SAT.\, 1 TO 4 p.m. &nbsp\;&nbsp\;Kids' activities\, photo exhibit and local foods tasting at DODGEVILLE LIBRARY

Free environmentally friendly activities especially for children and a photo exhibit for adults will be at the Dodgeville Library from 1 to 4 p.m. Downstairs in the City Council Chamber will be a local foods tasting and exhibits of area organizations involved in protecting the earth.
&nbsp\;
SAT.\, MARCH 13\, 8:30 TO 11:30 A.M. &nbsp\;Land Management Workshop at Folklore Village\, 3210 Cty Hwy. BB (east of Dodgeville -- off of Hwy 151)
DESCRIPTION:
Think Globally&hellip\;Act Locally

Gain World Perspective by joining our 2010 Great Decisions Discussion Group at the Dodgeville Public Library.&nbsp\;

The Great Decisions Discussion Program is the oldest and largest grass-roots world affairs education program of its kind in the country.&nbsp\; Each year\, the Great Decisions editorial board selects eight of the most pressing global issues and regions that will be the focus of the briefing book\, television programs\, and online resources.&nbsp\; Great Decisions meetings feature open and fair conversation\, without requirement for consensus.&nbsp\;

Materials from the Foreign Policy Association are available at the Dodgeville Library prior to each session.&nbsp\; Participants may check-out briefing books from the library or purchase their own from the Foreign Policy Association for $18.&nbsp\; The library has 3 briefing books available for 1 week checkout &amp\; 1 copy for in-library use only.&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Additional books recommended by the Foreign Policy Association are listed below each topic.&nbsp\; Go to the Great Decisions website at www.greatdecisions.org for additional resources on each topic and to order briefing books.&nbsp\;

Pre-Registration is recommended by contacting Vickie at 608-935-3728 ext. 12 or via email at vstangel@swls.org.

The following topics have been selected for discussion at the Dodgeville Public Library:

March 18\, 2010\, 7 pm&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Great Decisions Series &ndash\; Peacebuilding &amp\; Conflict Resolution
U.S. campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan have shown that military force alone cannot ensure peace in all conflicts. How can the U.S. successfully integrate the tools of peace building into its statecraft? At what point do poverty\, disease and climate change threaten national security? What role can non-governmental actors play in supporting government led efforts?
March 25\, 2010\, 7 pm&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Great Decisions Series &ndash\; The Persian Gulf
Now more than ever\, the Persian Gulf region offers many difficult challenges to U.S. policymakers. How will Obama's direct appeal to Arabs and Muslims impact U.S. foreign policy in the region? What will the fallout of withdrawal of U.S. forces from Iraq be? Can the U.S. and its allies prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons?
April 8\, 2010\, 7 pm&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Great Decisions Series &ndash\; Global Financial Crisis
The global financial crisis that began in late 2007 revealed major deficiencies in the regulation of markets and institutions\, all of which came perilously close to collapse. Emergency measures to prevent a full collapse of the global financial system have led to mixed results. How will governments and the world community respond to this challenge?
April 15\, 2010\, 7pm&nbsp\;&nbsp\;&nbsp\; Great Decisions Series &ndash\; U.S. &ndash\; China Security Relations
China's influence is growing\, along with its military expenditures. How will this growth affect China's relations with its neighbors and with the U.S.? Will China's expanding military and economic power affect traditional U.S. roles and U.S. alliances in East Asia? How will countries like Japan\, South Korea and India respond?
DESCRIPTION:
The Death and Life of Oscar Romero

&nbsp\;

By Gary G. Kohls\, MD

This Wednesday&nbsp\;will&nbsp\;be the 30th anniversary of the assassination of El Salvador's Archbishop Oscar Romero\, a pivotal moment in the modern history of Central America and a moment that deserves reflection among U.S. citizens regarding the role their own government played in the ghastly bloodshed that surrounded&nbsp\;Romero's death.

Gunned down while saying Mass on March 24\, 1980\, Romero died because of his outspoken condemnation of militarism and injustice. He had emerged as the highest-profile defender of impoverished campesinos and idealistic members of the Catholic clergy who were demanding an end to centuries of inequality and repression in El Salvador.

Romero's murder also demonstrated how far Salvadoran rightists were prepared to go in stopping the growing movement for social and economic reform. The brazenness reflected\, too\, how confident the anti-communist security forces were in their eventual support from the U.S. government.

Yet\, Romero was an unlikely martyr for justice. He had begun his rise to power in the Salvadoran Roman Catholic Church as a lowly\, rather na&iuml\;ve and very conservative priest who was elevated to the episcopacy partly because he was thought to be an obedient servant for the wealthy Salvadoran elite.

Romero was expected to protect the elite's tradition of maintaining power and control\, by any means necessary\, over the exploited working classes\, especially the rural peasants\, most of whom were practicing Catholics who had been told for centuries&nbsp\;to look to the after-life for their reward.

However\, these campesinos had begun to show signs of revolt\, finally demanding freedom from their centuries of oppression. They formed quasi-revolutionary groups deriving inspiration from Jesus' gospels praising the poor and rejecting greed.

Romero&nbsp\;saw how the Salvadoran security forces were resorting to torture\, extra-judicial killings and disappearances to silence and intimidate the liberation movement\, including young clergy assigned to Romero's archdiocese. Each night\, mutilated bodies were being dumped along the streets.

In the face of this cruelty\, Romero's politics and theology did an about-face. He began a courageous three-year ministry openly opposing the Salvadoran military\, the wealthy elites and his compromised Catholic Church hierarchy\, which had long sided with the rich and powerful.

His path to martyrdom was set\, and he knew it.

Romero became a Christ-like figure\, who followed&nbsp\;Jesus' example of unflinching anticipation of&nbsp\;martyrdom. Romero also&nbsp\;adopted the methods of Jesus\, a strategy of active nonviolent resistance. He&nbsp\;repeatedly called on the security forces to stop the repression.

He pleaded directly to the&nbsp\;soldiers\, who would change into plains clothes before heading off onto their death-squad missions. He told&nbsp\;them\, in the name of God\, to refuse orders to shoot their countrymen. In his last Sunday sermon\, a broadcast he knew was being monitored by the Salvadoran military\, he said:

&ldquo\;Before an order to kill that a man may give\, the law of God must prevail that says: Thou shalt not kill! No soldier is obliged to obey an order against the law of God.&rdquo\;

Romero knew his days were numbered\, but that knowledge didn&rsquo\;t stop him from speaking out&nbsp\;for human rights\, on behalf of&nbsp\;the poor and helpless. In one of his last interviews\, Romero said:

&quot\;If God accepts the sacrifice of my life\, may my death be for the freedom of my people ... A bishop will die\, but the Church of God\, which is the people\, will never perish. If they kill me\, I shall arise in the Salvadoran people.&rdquo\;

Romero maintained his Christ-like\, nonviolent stance to the end\, even&nbsp\;challenging the ethics&nbsp\;of&nbsp\;leftist rebels who felt that they had no recourse but to exact violent revenge against the fascists who controlled the security forces.

On March 24\, 1980\, after ending his final homily\, Romero turned to the congregation to consecrate the Eucharist. And he said:

&quot\;May this Body immolated and this Blood sacrificed for Mankind nourish us also\, that we may give our body and our blood over to suffering and pain\, like Christ -- not for Self\, but to give harvests of peace and justice to our People.&quot\;

Then\, the assassin&rsquo\;s bullet pierced his heart.

And like Jesus who urged forgiveness for the obedient Roman soldiers who were &ldquo\;only&rdquo\; following orders as they carried out his torture and execution\, Romero&rsquo\;s last words were: &ldquo\;May God have mercy on the assassins.&quot\;

Romero's assassination was widely believed to be the work of former Major Roberto D'Aubuisson\, who\, like other Salvadoran death squad operatives had trained at the U.S. Army&rsquo\;s School of the Americas and who reflected the intense anti-communism that had long pervaded U.S. national security policies.

After Romero's killing\, the reign of terror grew worse. Opposition political leaders and unionists were hunted down and murdered.

The rightists also were emboldened by the election of Ronald Reagan in November 1980. The next month\, Salvadoran security forces kidnapped\, raped and murdered four American churchwomen\, an act that some members of Reagan's inner circle found reasons to excuse.

Once in office\, Reagan escalated U.S. military assistance and training for the Salvadoran security forces while going on the offensive against human rights activists who&nbsp\;reported on the repression.

In December 1981\, the first U.S.-trained Salvadoran army unit\, the Atlacatl Battalion\, conducted the systematic slaughter on the entire village of El Mozote in northeastern El Salvador. The victims included women\, some of whom were raped first\; their children\; and unarmed men. The total of those killed was believed to have exceeded 800.

When reports of the massacre surfaced in the U.S. press in early 1982\, Reagan officials denied that a massacre took place and set out to destroy the careers of journalists who reported such stories. (It would take nearly a decade before a United Nations forensic team was allowed access to El Mozote where it dug up the skeletons\, including tiny ones of little children.)

The Reagan administration also escalated military support for right-wing regimes in Honduras and Guatemala\, where other death squads and extermination campaigns kept&nbsp\;control for right-wing elites. And Reagan's CIA organized support for a terrorist anti-communist force known as the contras which ravaged border areas of leftist-ruled Nicaragua.

Before the U.S.-backed counterinsurgency in El Salvador ended in 1992\, some 75\,000 people had died and D'Aubuisson's right-wing ARENA party had become the country's dominant political force. In 1993\, a U.N. truth commission determined that D'Aubuisson had ordered Romero's assassination. (D'Aubuisson\, however\,&nbsp\;had died a year earlier of throat cancer.)

A number of key U.S. officials who participated in the Central American butchery &ndash\; the likes of Elliott Abrams\, John Negroponte and Otto Reich &ndash\; have remained active in American politics and some landed prominent jobs in George W. Bush's administration.

Last year\, the leftist FMLN\, the political heirs of the revolutionary movement of 30 years ago\, finally ousted ARENA from power. In their electoral victory\, the leftists hailed the inspiration they drew from Romero's martyrdom.

After winning the presidency\, FMLN candidate Mauricio Funes said\, &ldquo\;I will govern like Monsignor Romero wanted the men of his time to govern\, with courage\, but with prophetic vision. Bishop Romero asked the rulers to listen to the cry of justice from the Salvadoran people.&quot\;

An hour before his inauguration\, Funes prayed at Romero's tomb\, a reminder of the power of non-violent inspiration even in the face of the worst forms of brutality and injustice.

Dr. Kohls is a retired physician from Duluth\, Minnesota\, and a founding member of Every Church A Peace Church (www.ecapc.org). He writes about issues of religion\, militarism\, peace\, justice and mental health.

DESCRIPTION:

As you probably already know\, the Clean Air Act\, a landmark environmental law that has been protecting us for over 40 years\, is under attack in the House and the Senate.&nbsp\; Corporate polluters are pushing legislation that would gut the Clean Air Act&rsquo\;s ability to control global warming pollution\, and our partners at 1Sky (WNPJ member gorup) are mobilizing people all over the country to take action.&nbsp\;

'The Storm' is happening right now -- it's a campaign where organizers are going to the field offices of elected leaders who have a wavering commitment to the Clean Air Act. The idea is simple\, tangible and effective: show up en masse and force officials to pledge their commitment to defend the Clean Air Act.&nbsp\;

At 350.org\, we believe that protecting the Clean Air Act is crucial\, and we think it's time to get to work to make sure that happens. By joining 1Sky and participating in The Storm\, you will be helping us maintain a critical tool that can shut down coal plants and transition the country away from fossil fuels.&nbsp\;

I know this is very short notice\, but The Storm is happening in your state very soon. Here are the details:&nbsp\;

Our strength will be in our numbers\, so it's very important that as many people make it out to this action as possible.&nbsp\;Please attend if you can\, and feel free to show up in rain gear (after all\, it is a storm!). I would love to hear a report back from you as to how many people participated and what the response of the elected official was.&nbsp\;

Have a great day\, and good luck!&nbsp\;
