Bring a favorite snack to share! 10:00am - 10:45am Keynote - Diane Farsetta, senior researcher at the Center for Media and Democracy/Pr Watch 11:00 am - 12:00 pm WNPJ introductions, Nominating Committee selection, Reports from the Field, focus on the media: tell us your media "success stories" and challenges. Workshops: 1) Writing op-eds and getting them published Amitabh Pal, Managing Editor, Progressive Magazine, Co-editor, Progressive Media Project Writing a newspaper op-ed piece is one of the most effective ways to get your views out to a broad audience. Bring a draft of an op-ed that you would like to get published in a local, statewide or even national paper, and, after this two-hour workshop, you will leave with a polished product and useful suggestions for how to get published. 2) News releases, media relations and news writing Gil Halsted, Wisconsin Public Radio Learn what makes an effective press release, and learn how to create a good working relationship with local reporters. Interested in writing for your local paper or community radio station? Bring a draft of a news article you're working on and get tips and suggestions from a veteran reporter. 3) Flyers that move people to action Steve Burns, Program Coordinator, WNPJ. Flyers are one of the simplest and most effective direct-to-the-public forms of media. Learn how to convert a news article, fact or story into a flyer that people will read and act on. |
